Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

new york (been done before, but whatever)

overrated- binghamton, nyu, stony brook
underrated- a lot of the other sunys, marist, some of the liberal arts schools (like colgate, hamilton)

just right- cornell, columbia, syracuse

Virginia

Overrated: Washington & Lee Majorly (There are MUCH better LACs in the South, Davidson and Sewanee namely), UVa slightly
Underrated: James Madison U and George Mason U

Indiana Colleges
This is based on what I have experienced from within Indiana. It seems that the average (and better than average) kids don’t realize the quality of education found within there own state. When I mention these schools, I normally get a “Huh?” Where?

Overrated: Indiana University (and yes I went there).
Underrated: Wabash, Earlham, Rose Hulman

The academics at these schools are superb, and each offers a unique experience.

Agree with some of the other CT posters here in that Wesleyan, UConn, and Connecticut College are tremendously underrated. Emphasis on Wesleyan.

I also have to agree that I think Yale is slightly overrated
I didn’t even try to apply there. I know it’s a great school, but I personally just don’t think I could take living in that part of New Haven for four years. I mean no disrespect to Yale, or Yale students, but I also have gotten the impression from a few Yale students that I know that TAs teach a lot of the classes

Colorado:

Colorado School of Mines

If you live in the state of Colorado, you know Mines is top notch when it comes to Engineering
Ask any Colorado engineering company
they’ll hire a Mines grad in a heartbeat over just about any engineering school.

US News ranks Mines at #77 for all schools and it doesn’t get much higher than that elsewhere. But take a look at Payscale.com’s ranking of starting salaries and mid career salaries for all institutions:
Here Mines ranks #14 of all schools for median starting salary
(#1 of all Public institutions) and #27 of all schools for mid-career median salary (#2 of all Public institutions
Cal-Berkeley beat them out).

I’m not calling for Ivy League-like status but I’d like to see a little more reputation attached to my degree if I went to work on the East or West coast. Just another example of a mid-west school getting the middle finger.

[Top US Colleges ? Graduate Salary Statistics](http://www.payscale.com/best-colleges/top-us-colleges-graduate-salary-statistics.asp)

CALIFORNIA:

I would say UCSD is underrated also.

Totally overrated here on cc:

every single ivy league. Look at how much attention these schools get. Look over there on the lefthand column. If, instead, you access a list of colleges from “Discussion Home”, you’ll see the college names right on the main page. That’s not true with any other series of colleges. Why just focus on an athletic conference? Size isn’t the answer, because some are no longer than an LAC.

WASHINGTON:

Overrated: UW undergrad, Western Washington University (everyone at my school goes there
whaaaat???)

Underrated: Evergreen State College. It’s not a stellar university, but just because it has the do-whatever-you-want curriculum it gets such a slacker bad rap.

OREGON:

Overrated: Reed
great academics I suppose but the school feels so unhappy and dreary

Underrated: If you are a full IB student, OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY.
If you are a theatre student, Southern Oregon University.
If you’re looking for a great LAC in the PacNW that isn’t quite as intense as Reed and isn’t quite as isolated as Whitman, Lewis and Clark is a great school

Overrated: Princeton
Underrated: Rutgers - New Brunswick(IS & OOS), Stevens Institute of Tech

Reed is overrated???

Indiana:
Overrated-Notre Dame
Underrated-IU

California:

OVERRATED
UC Berkeley - It’s an amazing school, to be sure, but many people in California believe that its undergraduate program is stronger than all of the Ivies + top LACs, but it isn’t that good.
University of the Pacific - It’s in Stockton, and it’s not even that good academically.
Pepperdine - Not as great as many Northern California students think it would be; sure, it’s on the beach, but it’s still not Stanford-level, despite what many people around here seem to think.

UNDERRATED
The CSU system - Especially standouts like Sonoma State, Chico State, and Humboldt State.
USF - People from around here think that it’s the ■■■■■■■■ child of NYU and Boston University, but it’s really not.
Pitzer - A good portion of Claremont applicants completely overlook the Shaggy of the Claremont Consortium and instead seek out Velma (Harvey Mudd), Scooby Doo (Pomona), and Fred (Claremont McKenna). Daphne (Scripps) gets about as much attention as she/it deserves.

Honesto - couldn’t agree with you more. Disclaimer - I have one child at USF and one at Pitzer - both are getting a different, but great education.

California:

I’ll start off by saying that it’s hard to judge schools as overrated or underrated if you’ve never attended or visited.

That said, I don’t understand the huge popularity of USC, beyond a pretty good football team.

As for schools I feel don’t get enough respect, UCSD and the Claremont schools.

Washington -

Overrated: Western Washington (at least at my HS, what’s so good about it
?), Puget Sound, PLU, Pacific (people always try to say “BUT IT’S A GOOD SCHOOL!” when they have to go to Puget Sound, PLU, Pacific because they get rejected by UW.)

Underrated: Seattle U (It’s a pretty little campus in a great, great city. Good education, on par with UW. Little pricey though.) Whitman (good good LAC!)

I don’t think UW is overrated at all. I think some of its undergrad departments, like Foster School of Business are underrated. And not many people know that UW Medical School is number 1 in the nation for primary care.

California -

Overrated:
-Berkeley. The campus is nothing special and the weird little town of Berkeley is, in my opinion, not the greatest college town. Also, the whole economic situation is dragging its rep down.
-UCSB: it’s got an amazing campus, but not much else.

Underrated:
-I have to agree with everyone else in the thread: the Claremont Consortium! Asian parents give the consortium a bad rap for some reason.
-Santa Clara, Chapman, Loyola Marymount: At least one department in these schools shine (i.e. Chapman Dodge). Santa Clara’s been getting a lot of attention lately, at least in the PNW area.

Having had a daughter and several of her friends go through Stanford; I would say it is over rated as an undergrad program in most all areas. Its prof’s are all focused on their research and publications and most have little or no interest in relations with undergrads.

Yes, you will be around some of the birghtest in the world among peers etc. But that also is frought with problems interms of a students stress and the deplorable grading curvers where even a great student feels like they have never done enough to keep their head above water.

The general advising for students at the undergrad level in all but the smallest majors is equally poor. It prides itself in academic excellence
but don’t be swayed unless you are on a full ride. The class sizes are large for your first 3 years
and the randomness by which you may come across an advisor who cares about helping you is pretty pathetic.

Now having a son who is at USD and also knowng students at some of the smaller colleges and even state school in Ca I would say is you are paying for your tuition to a private school, you ,as an undergrate deserve at the very least relationships with prof
not foreign T’A’s and you absolutley deserve advising to help with sorting the journey to Graduation.
For Undergrad we give Stanford 10 thumbs down !

wow, thanks genevas, nice to know this

the only question I have is:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1062387323-post11.html</a></p>

how did you enter last year as a Freshman at a California college, with a full grown kid already at Stanford.

must be tough eh?

^ownd

but as a result of Honestos proposed circumstance the jury is still out

Parents and children share accounts on all the time on this site, that’s really not that weird. It’s not as if you’ve discredited what he/she has said. My older sister attends Stanford, and while she loves it, she does acknowledge that the university has many problems.

also 6 of genevas’ post are written by a parent
