Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

over: uf miami fsu
under: ucf fiu floridagulfcoast new college

Ohio

Overrated:
Case–basically it’s solid for anything bio or pre-med, and mediocre to worse for everything else. Even engineering and non biological sciences are middling at best and don’t even think about social sciences or humanities. Located next to the Cleveland ghetto.

Miami of Ohio–a decent second tier public university if you’re a white, conservative business major, but it’s nowhere near the public ivy nirvana its supporters claim with Chairman Mao disciple–shaking their little red books at you–fervor. In the middle of nowhere.

Underrated:
Kenyon–should really be considered up there with the Williams and Swarthmores in my humble opinion.

Underrated: Tulane
Overrated: Michigan and University of Penn

^^^Overrated: People who like Tulane and can’t follow simple thread instructions

“Fallenchemist” has become a “RisingChemist”
congratulations, I guess.

I’m in MA
so, Harvard would be overrated
Underrated: Olin, Boston University

I used to live in CA
Overrated: Berkeley, UCSD
Underrated: Santa Clara University, UC Santa Barbara

I agree, in California, Santa Clara University is underrated

Maryland

Overrated: University of Maryland, College Park: People act like it’s Harvard

Underrated: St. Mary’s College of Maryland and UMBC

Overrated - Belmont
Underrated - Sewanee, Rhodes

Great thread. I’ve lived in 4 diff states

Illinois
Underrated: University of Illinois Chicago - the faculty is phenomenal (I agree that U of Chicago is as well but thats changing)

Overrated: DePaul - it has no business being on any national lists like Fordham it benefits from location and is a backup school for local wealthy brats.

UMaryland is overrated in Maryland (most top students don’t go there instate or go elsewhere for out-of-state).

St.Mary’s college in Maryland is underrated.

Overrated: Penn, Pitt, Temple
Underrated: Lehigh, Bucknell, Muhlenberg

Over - Stanford
Under - Any of the Claremont colleges

Michigan:

Overrateed: U of M
Underrated: Michigan Tech

Re: Wayne State : not sure how it is perceived here because it’s never mentioned, but I went through the Chem Engg program 25 years ago on a free ride scholarship. Graduated near the top of my class but left there not knowing much of anything. I got a good job and did well (b/c I am a quick learner) but thought their engineering program was awful. It’s very research oriented and you leave not knowing how to apply the theory to real life applications. JMHO.

Psychologically

Most Most overrated: The school that rejects me which I think I should certainly in.
Most overated:The school that rejects me which I apply it just for fun.
Most underrated: The school that accept me.
Most Most underated: The school that accept me, which my peers think sucks.

I am joking!

Overrated: NYU
Underrated: SUNY Geneseo

Ma

Overated: BC

Underated: Bentley

I’m in NJ I actually wouldn’t say anywhere is overrated.

Underrated: TCNJ and maybe even Rutgers at least it seems that way when instates talk about it.

For Virginia

Overrated: UVA (though I will probably go here)
Underrated: UVA engineering (right? Right?!) also George Mason in northern Virginia because of the proximity

For California

Overrated: San Diego State (aka Chico State south) I know many students who have passed on UC Santa Cruz and Riverside to attend SDSU which is too bad because the quality of education is subpar and much of the faculty tuned out 15-20 years ago.

Underrated: UC Riverside - it is a still a UC with some STELLAR faculty and great facilities. It is also still small enough where if you show initiative you can have some great relationships with faculty. The whole “UC Rejects” thing is a joke. I know many students who have gone on to Ph.D and professional programs.
