For California:

Over-rated: Stanford and USC
Under-rated: UCSB (although its Materials Engineering, Bioengineering, psych, soc are highly-ranked, but the insistence on its being a party school and nothing more is erroneous) and
Mills collegeāa fine womenās college on par with Wellesley and Smith with esp. strong humanities and sciences.
Pomonaāexcellent school that can never quite shake off its icky location

For Maryland:

Over-rated: Hopkins (esp. if you take into account its problematic social culture)
Under-rated: St. Mary College, St. Johnās college, and Univ of Maryland @ College Park

Iām from California, but I went to high school in Florida so I know more about the schools thereā¦ What I have to say about California is pretty much the same as everyone else, that the Claremont colleges are excellent and underrated. Many of my friends in California had not even heard of them. But California in general has excellent schools, there are more truly great schools than overrated schools there, I think.

For Florida:
Overrated: University of Floridaā¦ So very much. I could safely say that the majority of my high school has UF as their top choice school, and would wind up feeling pretty inferior if they wound up going to the other big state schools here. The mentality here is screwed up, and things like āI didnāt apply to UFā or āI want to go out of stateā are not commonly saidā¦

Underrated: New College is an excellent and underrated college here, and Iāve also heard that Rollins is very good but I donāt know very much about it. But the fact is that every school in Florida besides UF underrated because people put so much hype into UF. Almost everyone I know considers UCF, UNF, UWF, USF, FAU, and FSU vastly inferior to UF. I know this doesnāt apply to everyone in Florida but it certainly seems to apply to a majority, atleast in HS. I live a little over an hour away from New College and yet hardly anyone in my school has even heard of it, because all thatās going through their minds is āGod I hope I get accepted to UF.ā

Florida colleges, and the way kids perceive Florida colleges, just generally annoy meā¦ Donāt come here.

Wow. Some rather mixed reactions about SUNYās. While I do agree that they arent exactly the best public schools in the country, some of their programs are elite. For example, binghamton for accounting, buffalo for engineering, geneseo for teaching, stony brook for sciences. There are definitely some good choices out there. Are they on the same level as cornell and columbia? Absolutely not. But Syracuse? NYU? St. Johns? Perhaps in some respects. Really though, no flagship campus is killing the system. Should probably get on that.

ā¦What? Lol.
