Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

@exegeis: Very good point. UChicago ranks higher than Northwestern, Cornell, etc. UChicago should get a lot of credit.

Colorado

Overrated: University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado College

Underrated: CSU Ft. Collins, Colorado School of Mines

I agree with Buddaā€¦ but I completely forgot Vassar is in NY lol.

Massachusetts:
Overrated- Harvard, Boston University
Underrated-Amherst College, Babson

Iā€™m from pa and I just want to point out an underrated one. Penn State Behrend in Erie its a great school for engineering. It never gets mentioned because of main campus but you can complete a lot of engineering degrees there.

state: rhode island

overrated: I guess Brown but it is obviously the best in the state

underrated: University of Rhode Island (a lot of people from my school seem to think it is some sort of a disgrace to go there but it is actually a good school)

Ohio

Overrated:

OSU- Iā€™m going here, but I wonā€™t be biased. People treat it like itā€™s an amazing school, which I agree it is, but cā€™mon people act like I must be sooooo smart going there (just makes me feel worse since I couldnā€™t afford my OOS schools/privates). People also make a big deal about the business school(where Iā€™m gonna be) and how great it is (not for Wall Street or top consulting though! ā– ā– ā– )
Still excited about school though, but Iā€™ll acknowledge my school is not exactly some hoity toity New England private that will lead to amazing business connections.

Miami(OH)- J. CREW U! ehhh if youā€™re white, evangelical, upper-middle/upper class, fratty, youā€™ll probably be fine. But some people treat the school like it is up there with Dartmouth. Ok sure. Business school can actually compete with OSU(for a top student), but at least OSU has the sheer size to attract a lot of recruiters

Case - good school for premed majors, sciences, but ehhhh not much else. Private school image helps the school but a place like OSU is going to be a much better for me(business student). And itā€™s in Clevelandā€¦lol. Although people sometimes complain about the neighborhood around Case. Wow, itā€™s not really bad at all, its just city living and you have to walk quite a bit to get to East Cleveland. Thatā€™s where **** gets REALLY interesting at night.

Underrated:

Dension - doesnā€™t get the love it should

Kenyon - would be considered a top LAC if it were located in New England/East Coast

Cincinnati - overall a pretty solid school and doesnā€™t really get much love. (one caveat: people RAVE about how good the engineering program is and they have some special co-op program. We get it, itā€™s good. But I had someone acting like it was up there with MIT. yeahhhh ok dude). Also the only football team in Ohio that has more than a snowballs chance in hell to beat Ohio State. That should count for something! :D

rest in Ohio are about right. some of the MAC schools here could get a little more credit I suppose. Dayton might be a little overrated (private school thing I guess), but I like the school and it has some solid areas.

State: Georgia

Overrated: Georgia Tech (you donā€™t have to be this super smart amazing kid to get in)

Underrated: University of Georgia (you have to much smarter than you think to get in)

Texas

Overrated: UT-Austin, Texas A&M, Texas Tech

Underrated: North Texas, Texas State, Sam Houston State

Texas!

Overrated: A&M, Texas Tech

Underrated: Rice (itā€™s very well /known/ here, but a LOT of people think itā€™s much easier to get into than it actually is; also, itā€™s very underrated out-of-state)

Besides Rice and UT @ Austin, Texas isnā€™t really known for its colleges and (I believe) rightly so.

Iā€™m from New York and Iā€™ve spent some time in Virginia. Iā€™ll start with Virginia

Over:
UVA - Everyone there is pretty arrogant
Under:
William and Mary - The people there are more down to earth, and Williamsburg seems like a more interesting town than Charlottesville. Also an academically rigorous program to boot. GMU and JMU follow, but they donā€™t have the prestige or the history.

In New York?

Overrated:
NYU - Ugh. This place gets the national spotlight because its in the heart of the city, and it has its own scene, and celebrity kids go there and blah blah blah. To the normal person who thinks New York City is a magical metropolis, its just an excuse to rack up tons of debt to ā€˜experienceā€™ the overpriced mecca known as NYC. Same sorta goes for Columbia, except its got an actual campus and not everyone can get in there.

Underrated:
Binghamton - Seriously, I donā€™t understand all the hate towards this school. It may not have the nicest looking facilities, but the school is a great bargain for those who want a good public school experience. Binghamton is making the moves to become a great State School, even if it isnā€™t recognized as one now on a national level.

New Paltz - A nice and rural SUNY that has more of a Liberal Arts College feel even though its a state school. Its in the ā€˜booniesā€™, but its close enough to Poughkeepsie to not be in the middle of nowhere by itself like say, Geneseo.

Marist - This school gets obscured by the likes of Vassar, but for a smallish private school, its a good bargain and it is close enough to NYC to use it as a resource. The school is selective, but you seldom hear about it outside of the ā€˜Marist Pollā€™ on a given newscast.

Florida

Overrated: UF
Underrated: Rollins & New College

Illinois

Overrated: Northwestern - reputation far exceeds the quality of the education delivered

Underrated: all the directionals - quality of education delivered far exceeds the reputations

Lived in MA, NY, PA

MA:
Over: Harvard (well, naturally), BC, BU, Northeastern (no, itā€™s not that great, and I donā€™t care about itā€™s co-op program), Tufts, UMass
Under: Amherst, Williams, Olin, MIT (I know)
Just right: Holy Cross, Brandeis, Wellesley, WPI

NY:
Over: NYU, Columbia, Syracuse, Cornell
Under: Fordham, Rochester, RPI, Colgate, Hamilton, Vassar
Just Right: Suny Binghamton

PA:
Over: Penn State, Temple, Drexel, Villanova
Under: Pitt, Carnegie Mellon, Penn
Just Right: Lehigh, Bryn Mawr

(in the average personā€™s mind)

Overrated: Berkeley

Underrated: Caltech.

Massachusetts-Underrated-Holy Cross, Tufts.

Michigan

Overrated: Michigan State. Itā€™s a really good school, but, as stated before, many people in the state rank it next to Michigan.

Underrated: Kalamazoo, Hillsdale

Everywhere:

Underrated: starting at community college and then transferring to a four year school to complete a bachelorā€™s degree.
