Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

Minnesota

Overrated: university of Minnesota twin cities

Underrated: St. Olaf, Macalester, Carleton

New Jersey: TCNJ-- Underrated, por muchooo

Florida:

Overrated: UF, UCF.
Underrated: Nova, USF, UNF, UWF.

Over-recommended on these forums:

New York University, to students who need a lot of financial aid. (Although it also seems over-popular as a “dream school” with students in the first place.)

Sarah Lawrence College, to students interested in majoring in something other than visual arts, performing arts or the very few other subjects it has in-depth courses in.

Small schools in general recommended without regard for suitability in the student’s intended major. (Many of them are good for many students, but would you recommend Caltech to a prospective Italian literature major?)

Oh, yay. Yet another thread that reveals CC poster’s complete disdain for, and condescension towards, flag ship publics.

Maryland

Overrated – Hopkins

Underrated – UMBC which is especially noted for it’s strong STEM program. Ranked #1 Up and Coming University 3 years in a row!

Overrated: Michigan State University

MSU isnt even in comparison with University of Michigan

Underrated: Kalamazoo

It’s funny that mcroson said Boise State is underrated, which I agree with. Sorry to get off topic for a second.

Everyone seems to think that Boise State is just a “football school” and while I guess that is a common first impression, due to the success of the football program, there are many great aspects out of the education as well.

I’m proud to have graduated from Boise State University and am lucky enough to be working with them now. There are many great things to come out of the educational side of the university that gets overlooked most of the time.

Recently, a Boise State engineering club called Greenspeed broke a world record for the fastest vegetable oil powered car at 155mph. Pretty amazing stuff to come from my little Idaho school and it’s not the only thing worth mentioning. For people who want to look more into Boise State beyond the football team, you should check out their Beyond the Blue program: https://www.facebook.com/BoiseStateBeyondtheBlue

Okay back on topic.

Overrated: University of Idaho - I know they are the Boise State rival and everything and I’m supposed to hate them but I can’t help feel that the Vandals are a lot of bark and no bite. They brag a lot about their education but I don’t quite see them making the news like Boise State is.

Underrated: Of course I’m going to say Boise State. I guess I more or less listed my reasons above.

Hi guys - I’m a long-time lurker, but this is my first time posting.

Texas

Overrated: SMU. For the 50K pricetag it doesn’t seem to have the same reputation as UT Austin or Texas A&M.

Underrated: UT Arlington, which is home to a top nursing and engineering school for a very reasonable price. The campus is really nice, and diversity is remarkable; I myself live in Arlington and I had NO IDEA how many types of people attended UTA before visiting it on a college event. They are also pretty generous with scholarships.

University of Houston is also underrated; it’s recently become a Tier One undergrad research university. Although it has a reputation for being a “commuter school” it’s located in Houston, a great place to get internships and jobs.

Georgia

Overrated- Georgia Tech; it’s like heaven to most people here and if you don’t get an acceptance letter, then you’re stupid.
Underrated- Emory; despite the fact that it’s such a good school, hardly anyone even applies to it

Virginia (cousins there):

Overrated -
UVA

Underrated -
William & Mary
Washington & Lee
George Mason

Overrated: Penn State.
Underrated: As I’m not a fan of my state, I can’t really think of any, though I do wish I’d completed the application to Elizabethtown College. Ah, well.

Overrated: Pitt and Temple. People there think they go to some sort of a public Ivy.
Underrated: PSU
everyone treats it as a safety, and it’s easyish to get in, but that school literally has it all, academically and otherwise. Villanova also never gets the respect it deserves.

Eh, I think those get about as much credit as they deserve
As for the overrated UF, I agree. They only become somewhat prestigious when their football team got really big. Classes are still huge and taught by TAs, dorms are little more than cells, and the rich kid scene is almost unbearable.

Underrated: Whitman College

Overrated: UW - good med school, but students think they attend some kind of amazing institution. However, there are some great people here, so I don’t think this school is entirely overrated, but it’s getting there.

I go to PSU and I don’t think it’s overrated if you’re talking about academics.

Overrated: UNC CH

Great place if you’ve wormed orphans in Africa and/or are a granola eating left wing social justice, Occupy Wall Street Type.

NC resident and VA Tech Fall 2012

UPDATE: State of Florida

Hopelessly Overrated: Univ Miami You’ve got to be kidding. Sun Tan U with BMWs and bottomless checking accounts.

Still Overrated, but returning to reality: Univ FL - Football isn’t saving them now and down their ratings go. Funny how that works and it didn’t take long.

Still Underrated: Florida State - More Rhodes Scholars and finalists than any other Florida university in decades and FSU remains unloved by some ratings. Hosts the only National Lab in Florida. Needs a journalism school to counteract all the UF journalism grad bias in media.

Wants desperately to be Overrated: Univ Central FL - The school the Mouse built. Not much else, except many ties with local community colleges.

About right: Univ So FL. Right about where UCF is, without the attitude problem. FAU, FIU, FGCU. All suffer from budget issues.

Underrated public LAC: New College

Needs to be merged: FAMU. It ain’t the 1930s any more. Time to move on.

Florida:

Overrated: UF. I still do not see what’s so great about that school yet my whole class wants to go there. It’s very annoying.

Underrated: I’d say USF. FSU and UCF tends to be the next choice for UF rejects. When I told my friends I picked USF they told me I’m smarter than that. USF is a great school!

Overrated: HYPS

Underrated: All community colleges and state schools.

PA:
Overrated: PSU
Underrated: Pitt

MD
Overrated: Can’t think of any
Underrated: UMBC

NY
Overrated: NYU
Underrated: Stony Brook
