Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

Overrated: University of Miami
Underrated: Rollins College, New College of Florida

Eh, Iā€™m almost positive that title belongs to New College. And they might also produce the second greatest percentage of Rhodes Scholars in the entire country in LACs.

Georgia

Overrated: UGA (when I was in 9th grade, we actually had a counselor come to class and give a presentation called: ā€œHow to plan your high school course load to get into UGAā€. Seriously, way too many people are in love with it for what it has to offer, in my opinion.)

Underrated: Georgia State (which isnā€™t really that great, but better than a lot of the smaller state colleges people try to compare it to)

Connecticut:
Overrated: Honestly, this one has to be Yale. Yes, it is extremely prestigious and amazing academic wise and people from all over the world come to it for higher education purposes, but it is just so annoying to hear about it. Otherwise, I still do not understand the allure of Trinity College in Hartford.

Underrated: UCONN for sure. It is an amazing university and it is more difficult to get into than some think. It is an excellent school to get an undergraduate or graduate education at.

Michigan:

Overrated: I would go with Michigan State University. Itā€™s a good school and has a lot of good programs (Pre-vet, accounting, supply chain management) but a lot of people think MSU is as good as University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. U of M is ranked a lot higher and is much harder to get into than MSU. Furthermore, U of M is able to attract a lot of top out of state students while MSU mainly gets decent in state students and a few international students. Also, MSU has heavily increased its tuition the past few years so MSUā€™s in state cost of attendance is very similar to University of Michiganā€™s in state cost of attendance. Finally, MSU is huge and has a lot of big classes for lower level undergraduate classes.

Underrated: Iā€™m going to go with Grand Valley State University. Itā€™s a good school and focuses more on undergraduate studies compared to the two Big Ten schools in Michigan. It has increased in prestige recently, and GVSU will most likely take the next step in the next few years as a good Midwestern university. I think people put down GVSU because of the social life, but the social life is decent for most students. Furthermore, Grand Valley State University is 15 minutes from Grand Rapids which has plenty of things to do for college students.

Some other underrated colleges would be Hillsdale College, Hope College, and Kalamazoo College. I think that those 3 colleges are underrated because of the public colleges in Michigan, and the fact that most Michigan residents go to public colleges.

Virginia

Overrated - UVa (Itā€™s ranking as one of the best public schools makes everyone think that itā€™s the best school for everything. Personally Iā€™d take UMich over UVa any day.)

Under - George Mason (Normally a commuter school for all the Northern VA kids who didnā€™t get into other schools across the state but its location makes it a pretty good school to graduate with work experience from a reputable company)

William and Mary is overrated in state and underrated out of state.

Virginia Tech is overrated for anything non STEM but underrated for many of the STEM majors in my opinion.

Texas:

Underrated: University of Houston.
Overrated: Rice University. Sorry - just my opinion.

Overrated: Drew university and TCNJ, the first is an overpriced pirate and the second is not that great of a school
Underrated: Rutgers is better ranked, cheaper, and has broader name recognition

(Texas)

Overrated: TAMU. Sorry but tamu is overrated, end of story. Aggies suck.

Underrated: UT Dallas, Houston, Texas Tech.

Just about right: Texas, Rice.

Missouri

Overrated:
Truman State
A lot of people would say Truman is underrated but its considered the ā€œeliteā€ public school in the state. People choose Truman because of its reputation as the highest tier of public college in Missouri. In fact if you look at its actual programs, the only thing that it beats some of the other schools (Mizzou, UMSL) is smaller class sizes.

UMKCā€™s six year medical program
Most kids going into the program do not actually understand how big of a commitment it is before they go in and struggle once they get in. I know some very bright kids that could have gone to stronger schools like WashU or Northwestern for undergrad but chose UMKC only because they would not have to worry about med school admissions.

Missouri S&T
A lot of people will tell you that its underrated because people do not know of it. Every one knows Missouri S&T, especially those in the fields of engineering or computer technology. It has got some great programs, but generally speaking they are not much better than those at Mizzou. S&T has also been having trouble improving its programs while Mizzouā€™s engineering programs keep developing but for some reason are still looked down upon by most students.

Underrated:
Mizzou (University of Missouri - Columbia)
It is the largest in the state, and most people seem to say its overrated. I do not see how you can say that other than the fact that more kids go to Mizzou than any other school in the state (but thatā€™s what you would expect from the largest school in the state), its got solid programs all around and offers a pretty decent Honors college that is accessible to all majors.

UMSL (University of Missouri - St. Louis)
It is not that well known but it has pretty strong education and biology programs. A lot of kids going to more elite schools (even Truman) look down at UMSL but it offers a pretty decent campus with programs that are continuing to grow.

Overrated: USC, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA

Underrated: Pitzer College, UC Davis,

NC:

Overrated: UNC-CH (Some people who arenā€™t necessarily the brightest get in there in state for all they boast about academics). High Point: some of the easiest academics in the country for one of the more expensive comprehensive fees in the country.

Underrated: Wake Forrest: I applaud them for taking the step of eliminating SAT scores from admissions if you chose to do so. They still remain a top 25 university in the country even without the SAT BS, but yet no one seems to want to go there.

Some old threads just never, ever die ā€¦ even though they richly deserve to.

WF gets about 11,000 applications for ~1,200 places.
(Nobody goes there anymore. Itā€™s too crowded. - Yogi Berra)

Washington

Overrated (by university):
University of Washington - Seattle, Washington State University - Pullman.

Underrated (by university):
Eastern Washington University, The Evergreen State College, Western Washington University, and private universities (Gonzaga U, Seattle U, Seattle Pacific U, Pacific Lutheran U, etc.)

Illinois

Overrated: Northwestern

I cringe whenever I see in-state residents choose Northwestern over U of I, especially for engineering. Cost-benefit analysis, anyone?

Underrated: UIUC, Illinois State

UIUC is a great school for business, engineering, and psychology. I have worked with Notre Dame grads in the business world, and many of them were impressed by how many UIUC grads were working in high-level jobs in Chicago.

Illinois State was awful 20 years ago, but has really improved. New business facility, new rec center make it the second strongest public school outside of U of I.

New Jersey:
Underrated: Rutgers, New Brunswick.
No school is overrated in NJ, including Princeton.

NY:
Overrated: NYU. It totally depends on its location.
Underrated: U of Rochester. It is such a good research school with excellent undergraduate education.

california
Overrated:USC
Underrated: CalTech

California:

Overrated: USC (I agree)
Underrated: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

Texas

Over rated: UT (Most people in Texas think it is the only good school in the country)
Under rated: Trinity University (No one has heard of it)
