Iām from Floridaā¦ but Iāve seen some interesting names thrown out there such as Loyola Marymount (ok look at my screename but, still someone from Cali said it lol)ā¦ University of Rochester (totally agree with).

New College of Florida is not underrated anymore. Everyone is aware that the school is an honors college and itās almost as competitive as the University of Florida.

I donāt know why everyone is saying the University of Florida is overrated, because itās not here. My school has about 400+ kids per class but under 10 get in every year, and the statistics are similar for neighboring areas. As far as Iām concerned, UCF, UF, USF, NCF are ALL on the rise, ESPECIALLY UCF. I read somewhere UCF is one of the top 5 up and coming schools, right on! (Iām a gator fanā¦)

People assume the University of Florida is overrated simply because everyone in Florida always talks about how much better UF is than FSU, UCF, etcā¦ I think all the Florida schools are pretty competitive and UF may be the next UVA or UNC-CH in up and coming years. UF is significantly harder to get in to than any other public school. Period.

South Carolina public universities:

Overrated: Clemson. Without its football team and its fans, youād never hear about it. Someone uptread mentioned Miami and its dropping reputation. Back when it had a very successful football team, it enjoyed a much better rep.

Underrated: College of Charleston. Alas, no football team in a football obsessed state.

How much do successful sports programs increase a collegeās rep? A lot.

Overrated: Rutgers!

Underrated: TCNJ. Because of the Rutgers and Princeton hype, I donāt believe it gets the recognition it deserves.

State: Minnesota
Overrated: St. Olaf College
Underrated: University of Minnesota- Twin Cities

Wow, thereās definitely a pattern here: large universities are overrated, small LACs are underrated. of course, thatās true 100% of the time, but very often. Why is that?

OVERRATED: EVERY SCHOOL
UNDERRATED: NO SCHOOL

School should not exist, only anarchy.

anarchy u. I went there - overrated

But if I have to choose something WITHIN the category of āschoolsā as overrated, I would agree with the dozens of others in this thread who said NYU, at least for undergrad (I went there so I would be an authoritative source on this). And by overrated I am referring to its position as the #1 (or #4 or whatever it is now) ādream schoolā. LOL why? Sure, itās in Manhattan, but so are a lot of other schools. Iām not sure how overrated it is academically.

Iāve lived all over the country, usually moving to or from Michigan. The Michigan/Michigan State relationship is fascinating and defies easy explanation, mostly because except for certain ethnicities and certain small geographical areas, almost nobody in the state gives the slightest crap about prestige or any of the statistical advantages UofM has over MSU.

Some of the smartest students in the state are thrilled to go to MSUā¦many are even thrilled to go to Central or Western Michigan Universitiesā¦itās like the concept of āprestigeā applies to what kind of car you drive and how hot your boyfriend/girlfriend is, not to what college you go to.

A close relative of mine has spent years studying and teaching at UofM and MSU, and he FAR prefers the atmosphere at MSU. He sees UofM as a collection of heartless people trying to pad their resumes before moving on to bigger and better places. Even though he now lives in Ann Arbor, he wants his kids to go to MSU.

Overrated:
Western Michigan- its not that great but a lot of people seem to like it. it is mostly a party school, hence the nickname wastern. (this applies for central too, although people now thats mostly a party school)

Michigan State- Most of the people i know that go are people who get decent-good grades and arent serious students really. they go to college so they get better jobs and so they can party.

Underrated:
U of M- to many people on CC this may seem strange, but it doesnt seem to be as respected in michigan as outside of michigan. people dont realize how lucky we are to have u of m here.

Hillsdale College- a very good private, liberal arts school on the rise, attracts a suprising amount of out-of-state students. overlooked by michiganders often

Kalamazoo College- a good liberal arts college that i didnt know about until i was researching colleges, is one of the colleges that change lives.

Michigan Tech- often overlooked (which may be because it is in the U.P.) but is a very good school for engineering; i think it is ranked in the top 5 schools for some kinds of engineering.

Minnesotaā

Overrated: Carleton, Macalaster

Underrated: St. Olaf, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Also, Harvard is overrated, for sure.

Georgia:

I donāt think we have any overrated colleges but for UNDERrated, definitely Emory University (in our state) as well as Georgia Institute of Technology. Most people apply to the latter as safety and Emory as low match (and for some, safety).

Washington:

Overrated: University of Washington, Whitworth, Washington State University
Underrated: Whitman, Gonzaga, University of Puget Sound

Overrated: Good schools

Underrated: Bad schools

Cornell U. ftw

Iām in Massachusetts.

So for most overrated, Harvard seems like the most obvious pick, but there is one people donāt realize - Boston College (you have no idea how much I love to say this, my dad and two sisters went/go there, I was nowhere even close to getting in.)

Seriously, EVERYONE wants to go there. And why? The sports.

Most underrated would have to be Northeastern University. Itās become pretty hard to get into, but it has one of the best co-op programs in the country. Though it hasnāt really gotten to be well-regarded yet. My parents were surprised when I told them I had basically no chance of getting in.

Underrated: Community colleges. Solid professors, lots with doctorate degrees and class sizes under 30. But even the ones that donāt have doctorate degrees, if they teach calculus for 10-years with a masters, I wouldnāt notice the difference. I would notice if i was being taught by a TA thoughā¦

Overrated: big public universities. (UIUC āquick we need more classes with 400 studentsā¦ we can always divide them into TA groups! Itll be fineā)

Overrated: Lists of overrated/underrated schools.

Underrated: The absence of such nonsense.

South Carolina:
Overrated: University of South Carolina (not even in the top 50 public schools in the country yet everybody wants to go there)
Underrated: College of Charleston

Massachusetts:
Overrated: University Of Massachusetts - Amherst
Underrated: Northeastern University
