bclintonk, get a grip. Is it really that big of a deal that some teenagerâs opinion doesnât jive with yours? This kind of thread is obviously not the place for facts.

Could we get someone to do Hawaii or some of the New England states (ME, NH, VT)?

ITT: We put every nationally well perceived school as overrated and every relatively unknown regional school as underrated.

New York! Specifically NYC

Overrated: Columbia (In a great city, but their core curriculum is strict as hell practically no flexibility of classes). Cornell (In the middle of NO WHERE, too big, many suicidal kids, subpar to other Ivies, just plain ugh) NYU (No real campus, very apathetic student body) Fordham (not diverse, bad financial aid, snotty students who step grounds into the Bronx and expect locals to treat them like royalty)

Underrated: Colgate, (Beautiful campus, great academics and athletics) Wagner (also a beautiful campus, nice small size, 30 minutes from Manhattan in Staten Island so you get a nice campus but access to all the great resources of NYC) Hofstra (pretty good programs/dual degrees, also in a suburban location close to NYC)

IBClass06: Thanks. And post 74 has Maine.

If I had to say a few, it would be MTSU Or Chattanooga, but I donât think anyone thinks theyâre amazing academically. Theyâre really popular though.

Under Rated:
Rhodes,Christian Brothers, Belmont, UT-Knoxville, Sewanee

UTK is a party school for sure, but itâs been getting better as far as academics go, and it doesnât look to be as bad as some people make it out to be (I go to Bama btw).

Overrated: Rutgers (especially now since the football program took off)

Underrated: not sure, but Iâve noticed that students who attend Ramapo do well for themselves after graduation

Overrated: UNC (OOS), Duke (undergrad), High Point (too much good press lately), UNCW (in state)

UNCA isnât widely enough known, but is about right for its student body. Schools not mentioned are pretty well assessed.

While Michigan is a better school than Michigan State, they seem to be going in opposite directions.

Ah, Michigan, what a riddled state : )
Hereâs my take, as a transplant:

Overrated by Michigan residents: Michigan State*
Underrated by Michigan residents: University of Michigan**

Overrated by normal folks: possibly University of Michigan, but rarely IMHO
Underrated by normal folks: definitely Michigan Tech in some program areas, just isnât as widely known

For reasons completely incomprehensible to me, many Michigan residents are unable to grasp the distinction between an internationally reputed and highly ranked institution and a strong, regional state flagship. From my perspective, MSU is the latter. No disrespect intended. It is what it is.
**For reasons equally confounding, a great many Michiganders fail to appreciate the fact that they have in their possession access to an internationally reputed and highly ranked institution. Iâve often heard the two schools lumped into the same sentence as options. Iâve noticed that many folks do not become aware of the selectivity issue until they have a senior applying, at which time things become a little more clear for them ; )

Michigan is definitely underrated in the state of Michigan. They take so many in state kids that it isnât all that impressive to get into UM. But it is still a great school, especially for business and engineering. MSU is neither overrated nor underrated. Michigan Tech and Kalamazoo College are underrated. Just about every other school is overrated.

@ anyone who was talking about NJ

TCNJ might be a bit overrated for in state students, but itâs definitely underrated if youâre looking at it from out of state. The scores are increased each year-- i know it doesnât seem like much for people on here but the average SAT score is a little under 2000 and i am not sure about GPA but i can tell you itâs pretty up there.

I also agree that Ramapo is underrated. I think itâs like the towson of Maryland, but harder to get into. not even 50% of kids got in there last year⊠like TCNJ, its standards have progressively been increasing

Michigan, even though there has been a large amount of dicussion already

Overrated:
Western-its not that great of school but a lot of people like it
MSU- its a good school but i dont think it is on the same level as UMich, which some people seem to think, and lot of the people who go here get good grades but arenât really that smart, these are the types who just go to college to party and so they get a better job. its not a bad school though
-besides UMich, most of the state schools are overrated
Underrated:
Michigan Tech-is overlooked often, but is great for engineering and is considered one of the best in the country in some fields of engineering. also overlooked partially to its location probably (it is in the UP)
Hillsdale College-a great liberal arts school on the rise
Kalamazoo College-havenât heard of it much until i looked at the colleges that change lives
UMich-sorta, i have noticed people in michigan dont realize how good of a school it is sometimes and view as pretty much the same level as MSU.

Huh? I see absolutely no evidence of that. What are you talking about?

Sheer personal opinions are not usually the criteria for deciding whether something is overrated or underrated. Columbia, for instance, cannot be considered overrated just because you donât like their Core Curriculum.

As one of the above posters said, Syracuse is definitely overrated in New York. Geneseo is nationally underrated as well as the University of Rochester.

Over: Harvard, maybe? (because thereâs probably no way to go but down)

Under: Northeastern, WPI
