But Penn is #1 in the Ivy League ;)

Overrated: NYU, Penn, Emory, BC
Underrated: Northwestern, Tufts, Hopkins, Pomona colleges

Overrated: trying to be funny on the boards by talking about Starbucks coffee or motorcycles in a college thread.
Underrated: sticking to the topic.

overrated: this forum
underrated: your own opinions =D

Overrated: the need for more than 526 posts for people to go off half-cocked about colleges they've never been to being overrated or underrated. I think we get the point: they're all overrated and underrated, and nobody has any decent evidence in either direction. But let's get back on topic, because Vicissitudes thinks that there is a new blockbuster about Berkeley coming tonight, and he doesn't want to miss it.

Overrated: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford
Underrated: Seoul National University(seriously)

I agree with you completely. I've checked in on this thread every now and again just to watch the train wreck. I see this as a microcosm of what's wrong with education in the US (and maybe elsewhere, but I woudn't know about that).

Here we have people who simply have ... opinions. They don't seem to feel that it's necessary to actually have any facts or to interpret those facts in any useful way. An opinion, however uninformed or ill-considered, is all that matters.

overrated: Princeton, duke

underrated: Berkeley, Michigan, UVa, UCLA, College of William & Mary, UNC, Yale, Amherst

I would suggest that pound for pound Princeton is the best undergraduate UNIVERSITY in the country. Inasmuch as it is typically ranked behind Harvard and Yale I believe it is underrated by exactly 2 out of a possible of a few thousand or so...well within the margin of error.

Keep in mind that Vangie never has any idea what he's talking about, and is only familiar with the West Coast

Finally, a man of reason. I know Tarhunt is a college professor, and I taught philosophy at 4 low-level colleges. To anybody who has graded college term papers, the posts on this thread are all too familiar--bold claims backed up by zero logic or evidence. Say what you want about Jesuit high schools and colleges, at last they put a strong emphasis on writing and backing up claims.

Underrated: colleges that stress thinking clearly, as you can't write clearly unless you can think clearly.

Please keep also in mind that this guy is biased against public schools.

^^ agreed. "State school trolls," was it?

Overrated: NYU's Stern business school (at least for undergrad - the grad ranking is more accurate)

Underrated: NYU's College of Arts and Sciences (the quality of education is much better than Stern and far exceeds its overall reputation and USNW ranking)

Btw I spent 2 yrs at each school so this is based on personal experience.

anton:

Well, at least it's based on SOMETHING!

Overrated: NYU, Notre Dame, and Miami University- Oxford (The one in Ohio)

Underrated: Berkeley, Michigan, and WashU

anton - that's really good to hear!

Overrated: going with the flow and saying NYU is overrated

Although I am suprised you said WashU was underrated.

Always happy to help :)
