most overrated/underrated college?

What does LAC stand for?

nathanmc: Liberal Arts College

Overrated: American universities
Underrated: Universities outside the US ;)

Overrated - Reed (why does it get all this positive feedback for boycotting US News?) lol

sort of kidding

Saying that Ivy League's don't give a good education is moronic, the 8 Ivies each give among the best. Please don't say U of M gives a better undergrad education. All stats point to Ivy League and similar private schools of dominating law school, med school, and business school admissions as well as recruitment by large firms, atleast by proportion. Not to say U of M isn't one of the best, but its undergrad is not as good as the same schools which it is better than at the grad level.

Cornell is severely overrated

for an ivy league, it's admission standards are ridiculously easy compared to its peers

i mean, go look at any college guide

cornell's verbal range is 630-720, that is honestly embarassing

Oh, you can get a great education at the ivies. Believe it or not the ivies aren't necessarily better than every other school in the country. If your no. 1 concern is getting a job after graduation then there is no place better for that than the ivies. If you truly want to be challenged and learn for learning's sake then you can get a better education elsewhere.

and not every smart kid in america can afford an ivy league education

Over: Carnegie Mellon or Michigan

Under: CAL

overrated:nyu,emory,case western,
Underated: state schools's ;lac's/

I wouldn't call a 720 verbal "embarassing"....but that's just me.

Me neither. I only know a handful of people (in real life) that scored above 720 on any subject, and many of them are going to top universities.

That was a snotty comment.

Overrated: Duke, NYU, WashU
Underrated: Olin, Harvey Mudd, Reed, Tufts

^Disagree with Duke being overrated, its in pretty much a perfect spot surrounded by Penn, Columbia, and Dartmouth, essentially academic equals. NYU is a big, popular school but isn't it already ranked in the 40's? WashU of course.

On being underrated, isn't HMC still in the top 10 or so LACs? Still a good position for a very specialized and extremely small school. No ones really given a good reason why Reed is underrated besides vague statements about "Reed being punished by US News" even though there is no evidence for this. Tufts I agree. Don't know anything about Olin.

Underrated: Ohio University, Indiana University, Georgia (most state schools are underrated)
Overrated: Washington University

overrated: I say NYU...what makes it so amazing that its worth that much cash, the cost of living in the area being that high or not?

I think NYU is in the upper 30s and HMC is 14th in the 2007 rankings. I wasn't really basing what I said off of the rankings, just the general perception of the colleges.

Reed is very focused on education, and has some of the most success with graduate's getting PhD's. It's not meant for everyone, but I feel that it doesn't get the respect it really deserves. The quality of the students going there is also very high, but I don't have the stats in front of me.

These threads are always dependable for laughs.

I would gladly respond to the NYU haters on here, but man im lazy.

Underrated: Brown, Berkeley, Olin
Overrated: Northwestern, WashU

Overrated: Stanford, Any of the UCs, UNC-Chapel Hill.
Underrated: Any top 30 LAC, Illinois-Urbana Champaign, UW, U minnesota-TC, Iowa, UT-Austin, wtc.

I'm surprised only a couple people mentioned LACs as being underrated. I mean seriously, Haverford, according to the Fiske Guide to colleges, is 5 stars academically, 4 socially, 5 quality of life. Harvard is 5 academically, 3 socially, 3 quality of life. This shows how underrated LACs are since the average person has no idea what haverford is. So come on, show all the LACs some more love!

Simple algorithm:

Overated: 1. Whatever schools compete against your academic circle (As an example: If you are Ivy, it is schools like Wash U or Northwestern; if you are Wash U or Northwestern it is schools like Brown, Dartmouth) If you are Public its Privates.
2. Schools you hate to be compared with because you think you are better (ex, If you are Northwestern its Wash U, Tufts ; If you are U of Chicago its Wash U, If you are Dartmouth or Cornell it is Northwestern, and if it's an Ivy only talk dare have Cornell say they are equal in any way to your Ivy)

As for under-rated: schools that are in your category if you are normally ignored, LACS, Publics or your own school but not your immediate competitor

For once it would be nice for someone at a school fighting to be in the top ten, to say their own school is overated (people at schools like Harvard, Princeton,Yale, CalTech. MIT, Stanford sometimes say they are overrated, because it doesn't matter because they are at the top, Harvard in particular).
