“How is Harvard overrated? You do realize that in most parts of the world people recognize Harvard as the best school in the world, don’t you?”

What does have to do with NOT being overrated (certain Harvard grad programs are worth it)? Most other people don’t know that other universities exist let alone compete with its academics and undergrads. If Harvard undergrads where dominating job placements AND performing in the top percentile at whatever career they choose then yea. Every ounce of prestige and aura would be deserved.

“How is Harvard overrated? You do realize that in most parts of the world people recognize Harvard as the best school in the world, don’t you?”

You do realize that you appear to not know what “overrated” means, don’t you? The fact that people think that Harvard is good determines how it is “rated”. If Harvard is not as good as people think, it is overrated. If Harvard is better than people think, it is underrated.

What irks me most is USC. It is known for film, and I don’t deny that. However, the way people obsess over it astounds me-other majors are not very spectacular over there. NYU is uber-expensive and doesn’t offer much for your dollar-the school is ‘in NYC’ so people love it.

And yes, Northeastern is underrated. People always look down upon it. I really don’t know why.

Northeastern has an obviously preprofessional emphasis – in some circles, overt preprofessionalism is looked down on. (People don’t say that they want to go to HYPSM to get recruited into investment banking, but a lot of them actually do go that route after graduation.)

@ucbalumnus Thanks for the clarification. I really was confused. And I agree–the co-op program at Northeastern is preprofessionalism at it’s shining glory. But that’s not a bad thing, IMHO!

You know, that problem people have with Northeastern bothers me beyond belief. If we want to look down on ‘preprofessionalism’, then shouldn’t we look down on applicants/students at HBS, Wharton, and other top schools focused on finance??? All of them have the goal of being rich and in the working world right? Then why attack Northeastern?!

Sorry. I’m on a rant. But honestly, preprofessionalism abounds in the Ivies as well!
