move-in advice

does anybody have any advice in regards to move-in? such as how to best utilize your time and i'm also worried about getting stuff stolen. one of my friends had his bookbag stolen with his wallet and laptop inside, so i'm quite worried. thanks!

Which dorm? Logistics depends on which dorm you're moving in to.

west quad..
fourth floor :T

Umm, people will be too tired from carrying things up stairs to take anything? =P

One suggestion is that you find out which part of the building your room is in, so that you don't park your car really far away from your room. Most buildings will only have one obvious entrance way/parking area, but west quad has a lot of entrances and is on the corner of two busy city streets.

Any advice for a soon-to-be Couzens resident?

I too am going to move into west quad...I am bringing 4 suitcases and 3 other smaller bags, will the move in makers help me get my stuff to the room, or will I have to let the taxi sit while I unload and come back?

Move in makers will help carry your stuff to your room. Assuming it's not raining, what they might do during peak times is have you unload your stuff into a big pile on the sidewalk first, and then have people take it up to your room when they become available. That way they minimize the amount of time cars spend waiting and it increases traffic flow. So you shouldn't have that much of a problem as far as waiting with a taxi. Usually we try and make sure that somebody's watching your stuff at all times (usually parents helping unload/watch stuff by the street, you go sign in at the front desk, and MIM movers watch the stuff by the side of your door until you get there).

what if the move-in makers take my stuff to the wrong room? -_-

You tell them your room number...

Do you know if we can borrow those blue carts like we could at the end of last year? I think I'm going to need one.

South Quad has 25 of them that we're using. Just to make sure people don't take them and forget to bring them back, we'll have a MIM assigned to each blue cart.

Hmm, I have to haul a bunch of stuff down from my apartment. Hopefully they'll let me borrow one.

how about the best time to move in (south quad in particular)--is it better to get there before 9 or sometime later in the morning or in the afternoon?

well, we're not allowed to move in during 4-6, but i'm moving in at 3:30. whatever.

I have a minivan full of stuff. I'm just going to write my name and room number on each box with a red sharpie. My roommate has admitted he is unprepared so I bought all the big stuff...tv, fridge, coffe maker, microwave. I think he said he has two suitcases. MIM will run away from me when they see all the crap I have. :)

Last year I helped move in the two all-girls dorms. You know how chicks bring a lot of stuff when they go on vacation? College isn't much different.

I'd say best time would be earlier in the morning, just because people are less likely to want to get up and more likely to be only able to move in during the afternoon because they're driving up/flying in the same day. Worst time is during lunch. I think South Quad is the only dorm on central serving meals for early move in people, plus the football team eats here, so there's a lot of extra people milling around.

You're advised to not move in from 4-6 because of traffic issues, but MIM people will still be there helping the whole time. Traffic shouldn't be too bad since everybody will be leaving the city and you're driving into it. Not sure if your Move-in information mentions this, but you want to turn onto Madison off of Thompson instead of State. This way you're facing the right direction for street parking. If you come in off of State, you have to either do a U turn or park in front of West Quad which means SQ MIM won't think we need to help you, and we have to ferry your stuff across the street and over a curb.

How are the dorms? Are they coed?

West Quad is I know coed. And they have the annual snowball fight against South Quad.

yeah. south quad is getting destroyed.

All right!!! Forgiven, are you in West Quad too?
