It seems that the more common route is to only have one of most stuff that can be shared easily (fridge, TV microwave, etc.) and to decide before hand who brings what. But if the two roommates decide that 2 fridges is the route that they want to take, then more power to them! From what I’ve heard, WashU dorms are quite spacious in comparison to other colleges, so I don’t think that finding space will really be a problem.

Organizing to have one of each is probably best. After all “more power to them” is exactly right: one fridge per person is a lot of extra power and electricity that probably won’t end up being justified.

Anything without an open coil (toaster oven, panini press, etc) is permitted.

Son has mailed several items to his campus address. We will be arriving Thursday afternoon, can we pick up his belongings before heading to dorm? Or does he need to get his ID badge first?

Need ID first, which will be given out with room key anyway. The mailroom is usually a complete mess the first week of class – with people sending stuff to college, getting books from amazon, etc. There is often a backlog. I wouldn’t guarantee that you be able to pick up the items on thursday (although this is more of a guess than anythng). Make sure your son checks his Wash U email – they will email confirmation and information for each package he receives (and the times they are open). No email generally means they haven’t processed yet.

That is really helpful info about mail and packages. Thanks!

When you enter the South 40 on Shepley Drive, you will be stopped, asked which dorm you are moving into and asked for your cell phone number. You will be given a sheet of paper that you need to put on your dashboard that tells the time you arrived and has your cell phone number clearly visible. The sign says you get 30 minutes to unload your student’s belongings, then you must move your vehicle to one of the outer parking lots. If you stay longer than 30 minutes, they WILL call your cell phone and ask you to move your vehicle. Our D was in Danforth her freshman year and Shepley her sophomore year. There is no parking lot on the loop drive near these dorms. You just get as close as you can and start unloading!

Son has received email concerning parcel arrival. We are trying to figure out what is best logistically. Will drivers license suffice as id at mail room to pick up packages? Or must you have a WUSTL id, which will require more than one trip to unload belongings? Any suggestions on who to contact specifically if you guys are unsure?

actually, I’m fairly certain that I’ve used my drivers license to pick up packages on the south 40. They just want proof that you are who you say you are.

Would you recommend that we stop by mail room prior to going to Dardick so that we can only make one trip to dorm?

No, because that’s actually going out of your way if you’re going to dardick. (Since you have no reason for a car to be over by hitzeman).

This is, of course, assuming that the mail room is still in hitzeman this year. But when I was on the south 40 today it looked like the mail room is still at least in the same general area (because a sign had an arrow pointing that way towards the mail room).

Also, give it a while before you go to the mail room. It will be crazy busy the first few days. Your son can pick up his things himself. If it’s super heavy boxes (ie you shipped stuff from home), he can always borrow a dolley from reslife.

If he has a lot of boxes, I’d recommend parking in the Wohl parking structure (no clue if they renamed it after Wohl got torn down)…it’s right next to Hitzman. Then drive around and go back to Dardick…its a good 10 min walk from Dardick to Hitzeman. They’re I think the two dorms furthest away from each other on all of the 40.

Although parking is a hassle, but it’s usually doable on friday and hopefully the mail room will be a bit less busy by then.

You can also wait a good 10 minutes at the mailroom on a non busy day. On move in days it’ll likely be a good 30 mins to an hour, if not longer. I’d do everything else first.

We’re getting stuff arriving via Utrucking. Do you think it’s okay for us to arrive before they said they’d get there (11:00-1:00) or is parking that tight that we shouldn’t get there before 11:00?

Utrucking is always late so I wouldn’t worry about getting there early.

Anyone know how tall the beds are?

pretty much as tall as you want them to be, you can adjust the height.

The mattress height of the bed is adjustable.

Ah posted at the same time as NW!

Great minds think alike, and at the same time I guess! haha

One thing I am unsure of is just how high you can loft the mattress. Does it go as high as it would be if it were a bunk bed, so one could fit the desk underneath?

marcdvl, thanks for the warning/tip about Utrucking. They were about 30 minutes late at pick-up too.

NW…no they don’t go that high (or even come close). I’d say about 4 feet off the ground is the max height. Might be able to fit a desk in…but you certainly wouldn’t be able to use it.

Lima…no problem, everytime I used them for summer storage they were at least 2 hours late for pick up from my dorm.
