Move In Madness

To maximize space of course lofting it would do it because theres that much room. I dont know what semi loft beds are but the standard beds thatt they have can go up pretty high where you can fit a good amount of stuff under it, Id say over 2 feet. But lofting it owuld give the most room cause you can put a tv under and a futon or anything

Does anyone know where I could possibly purchase a USED loft for my daughter instead of having to rent one? She will be attending the University of South Carolina in the Fall.

Are any freshman parents planning on not going to move in?

My S is going to have to move in late (like Mon or Tue or Wen) depending on when he gets back from the music tour he is participating in. His mother and I will both be working. Am I horrible for not helping him move in?

He basically already has all the essentials packed up and can essentially toss his stuff off the tour bus into his car and head off to college on his own. We only live an hour and a half away, and he will have a car, so I figured that he could pick up anything else he needs the next weekend (I figure he will want to come home and see his hometown friends that he has missed all summer as he left on the tour the day after graduation).

I was also thinking that we would have some additional stuff packed up and ready to go for him (I will be ordering his books from an online source next week). Is there a list of stuff that he needs?

Here is the packing list from University Housing:
[USC Welcome Home](<a href=“Housing - Housing | University of South Carolina”>Housing - Housing | University of South Carolina)

My dd brought everything on the Yes list and most things on the Maybe list. Very important things to note about the “No, but…” list – the dorms are supposed to have wifi but it is not at all reliable so Capstone dorm recommended a 25ft ethernet cable… tougher to find when we got there than expected. Also, absolutely NO extension cords are allowed. Find a surge protector with a long cord (12’-15’) because that is the only way you’ll get power to something at the other end of the room from the outlet.

And remember, if you’re in a suite style dorm, bathroom cleaning is up to you. Daughter’s female suitemates had no problem with this… the boys in the suite next door not only never cleaned, but never even thought about cleaning supplies. It was not a pretty picture come move-out day…

Does anyone know how much room you can get under the adjustable beds in Maxcy? It’s nice and all that they tell us they’re adjustable… but that’s not very specific when it asked for height. xD

If he doesn’t object (and since he has a car in case he discovers he is missing something he really needs), it seems fine to have him move in without you.
If possible, he should stick around campus the weekend after move in. That is really a key time for finding friends. If possible, he should wait one more week before he runs home to pick up the last minute stuff and sees friends.

AUGirl, I don’t know about the beds in Maxcy, but if they are like the beds in Capstone then when set at the highest point there is almost 3ft of space underneath. Plenty of room for storage bins, stackable drawers, etc. and maybe the dresser. But if you wanted to put a desk or futon underneath you would need to loft the bed.

^Thanks. I wasn’t planning on putting my desk underneath or bringing a futon at all. I was just wondering if I could put like boxes and store stuff under there. haha.

plenty of room for boxes, storage bins, even those roll out sets of plastic drawers.unless they have changed the dressers in Maxcy (come to think of it most likely they have!) the old dressers were tall and wouldnt fit under a raised bed

I remember that the dressers were pretty tall when I visited… I think I counted and they had about five drawers, so I figured they couldn’t fit under the bed. Thanks for the info though! :)

FYI - weather forecast looks like around 96 and pop up thunderstorms (on Thursday so probably similar for Friday/Saturday). Not great, but it’s 100 today so we’ll take a few degrees cooler.

Best tip for moving in I can offer: be early! Moving in is so much easier if you get there right when you can first start (I think it’s usually 8 am?). There are plenty of willing hands to help you, parking is easier, it is cooler, the elevators are not clogged, etc. It makes the day so much smoother! That way, you can have everything more or less unpacked and settled in by lunchtime or early afternoon (by which point you can usually see a thunderstorm brewing), and can make a run to Target or Walmart before things get really crazy in there. Target and Walmart are always very well stocked with college supplies, so you don’t need to buy a ton of stuff before getting there. In fact, for a lot of organizational supplies/shelving/storage items, I would suggest waiting until you’re in the room before buying them. That way, you can tell if you will need a closet organizer, or if that hanging bar will really fit, or if those drawers were really what you wanted. If there’s something you really want to make work in a room, get it, but otherwise, I would hold off until you see the room. Many buildings have a wide variety of configurations (Honors is a prime example of this, but it is very true for many of the other dorms), so you probably won’t know the exact feel and dimensions of your room until you see it for yourself.

Or keep things you buy in original packaging and keep receipts. I’d rather return something the next week than deal with Target and Walmart on move-in day. Zoo… Unless of course you are flying in and then I would consider Sunday morning to hit Walmart and Target

Last year we got up at the crack’ o dawn and arrived by 10 AM. Our main goal was to beat roomie who was also coming from ATL. We were unloaded, set-up, etc. by lunch. Luckily for us we passed roomie in the hall on the way to the car. We did not hang around, but roomie’s mom did take them to Wal-mart for misc items. Too many people in the room at once does not work. We are not going until Sunday this year. Our daughter just finished summer school and is staying with friends in COLA until she can move in the dorm.

I didnt think WalMart or Target etc were bad at all in Columbia compared to other ones I’ve been in at college move in times…I kept wondering where the crowds were! And things were well stocked.

Agree with Cathymee on shopping situation in Columbia, if you are from a large metropolitan area you’ll be shocked at the lack of crowds. Harbison area is a good alternative, Walmart, Target, BB&B, Kohl’s and a Mall! Bags packed, cars filled, kleenex ready… Columbia here we come!

There is a nice, very well stocked Target on Garners Ferry Road (Devine Street merges into Garners Ferry).

The employees are very helpful and there’s much less traffic than Harbison.

I’m kinda sad that we’re not returning to Columbia this year but daughter graduated, which is good. Hope everyone has a wonderful year!!

(AUgirl, have you considered a CIA career?)

hehe. You’re not the first to ask me that!

Anyways, I moved in yesterday. Arrived at about 11:45. Parked across the street from Maxcy. Walked in. Had to wait for one person in front of me and then I checked in. Went to my room, met my roommate again. Went back to the car, started unloading stuff, and brought it inside. I also parked my bike. We went to Five Guys for lunch and then went to Barnwell to pick up my loft. Came back and set that up.

It was a pretty easy move-in process. Most of the people on my floor in my dorm already moved in on Friday, during early move-in. Some of the foreign exchange students are still coming in. But, overall, it’s been pretty tame and quiet.

The only thing bizarre is the fact that they placed us in the “Spanish House”… and both my roommate and I took French in school and most of the people living in the “Spanish House” didn’t sign up for it. But it’s okay. USC has been really great so far!

Hi there to all! Our daughter moved into Patterson this past Saturday. It was crazy packed…some people waited anhour and a half in line to get to the elevators. All in all, it was an exciting experience and all went well. We are very excited for our daughter and even though she did not know who her roommate was until Friday night, it all worked out great! So far, so good…counting our blessings as always and keeping our fingers crossed. ;)

the pics of the redone Patterson on the Daily Gamecock site look awesome! Hope your daughter has a great freshman year!
