I'm an incoming freshman moving in this fall. I am planning to bring my clothes pretty much.. Anything else I will purchase when I arrive and settle in.
Will a suitcase or two do? Or do people usually move in with ridiculous amount of boxes or something?

You are a parent’s dream. Would that D had only had that much. The good news is, depending on which dorm you are in, there are very convenient Kmart, Staples and Best Buy stores in walking distance PLUS the Bed Bath & Beyond that you can take a shuttle to on move-in day. You COULD pack one towel, maybe a light bed cover just in case you don’t make it shopping that first day. My guess is in actuality, two suitcases may get you the basic clothing and toiletries to get started, but you’ll need your winter things etc shipped.

OK, I like writestuff’s short list much better and for those who are less O-C. However, if you want to think comprehensively about what you need, a previous thread of mine referred to another parent’s very, very detailed list of what to bring to college.

I shortened it somewhat (haha) to pertain to the NYU dorm set-up. This list is for you to customize for yourself. And as writestuff mentioned, for those coming from afar, think about picking up necessary items in NYC or shipping some items to your dorm after Move-In Day when they will start accepting your mail packages and deliveries.

does anyone know when the move in day is???

Thanks for this list, Evolving! Checking it out now.

Isealbz,

You’re welcome. Don’t be too overwhelmed. If you are moving into a NYU dorm, then go with my info based on what the NYU rooms generally have and then what is still required for your own comfort. Worst case scenario, go with writestuff’s summary recommendation (ahh, so nice and brief).

Also, we can stay in the dorms during winter and spring break, right?

Yes. Dorms are open from Aug 28 straight thru till your last exam in May. The dining rooms, do close for the breaks and holidays.

I think it’s so funny I get credit for the “short and sweet” what to bring advice…we all know my stories about D’s 50 pairs of shoes/boots, many, many shipped boxes and the $500+ we are paying for storage this summer. Would that my own child would have followed my advice!

Ahh, writestuff,

But you do get the credit. Just because D is her own free person and does what she needs to do for herself does not mean that you are not a good advisor. You are not responsible for the youngster not carrying through with your very sage advice. :)

Do you know in our case, S was prejudicial against NYU at application time. I had to “coerce” him into throwing the NYU app back into the hopper (due to NYU’s prime location in NYC, which he bought) and he reluctantly submitted the app. Now he is happy and content at NYU. I also had to dissuade him from the NYU summer meal plan but he did not listen until he found out there are only 2 locations open for dining in the summer close to Wash Sq (he is at 14th St.). So, my advice was good (haha, I am not sure about persuading him to apply to NYU. :)), but S followed the advice based on if he wanted to (or not).
