Moving Schools

I am a rising junior and am moving schools this summer. My only extracurriculars so far are dance for about 10 years (but I had to quit after freshman year for financial reasons), working in the summer (about 30-40 hours a week), and volunteering to help non-english speakers practice their English about four times a week. Will I still be able to get into a good college if I join new clubs junior year at a new school?

yes, many kids move during the high school years. get involved at your new school and community and it will show how you jump into and adapt to new situations - exactly the skill needed for college!

it may be harder due to covid and unsure of the in person opportunities, but sounds like you have found ways to be involved with your volunteering outside of school too. have you explored your new high school’s website and can you reach out to club leads or the student’s on student gov to introduce yourself? also, i believe you should be assigned a guidance counselor and it would be great if you could reach out now and introduce yourself too. take care!

How much work did you do with the English learners? Has that program moved online? If so, you could keep that up remotely from wherever you end up, provided you have internet access. Or if you and some of the learners have good voice coverage with your phones, you could even set up practice times for five or ten minutes a couple of times each week.

Also, what kind of dance do you do? There are a lot of free classes available right now on YouTube and Facebook (for classical ballet, look for Kirov Academy of Washington, DC on Facebook). You might be able to keep your skills up until you can afford paid classes again.
