MPulse Musical Theatre Workshop 2012

Another note about this. D was surprised before attending MPulse to hear how few of the previous years’ class wound up attending UMich, but what she learned from watching her class is that many people (at least 6 from her year) never audition for UMich for various reasons, most often because they are admitted ED or EA to their top-choice schools.

That’s understandable. Would be nice to have those options! Not sure yet if D will be applying to UMich, but she is interested in learning more about the various programs and comparing/contrasting to see what would be a good fit for her. Many good schools out there makes it a tough process to narrow down that shortlist!

It’s true that there are lots of great programs out there – UMich obviously among the very best – and it’s also nice that there are programs with different strengths that suit different performer’s needs.

I think one of the best things about summer programs is that they really help kids get their minds around what they most want from their 4 years in college.

<< I’m obviously forgetting a bunch of people so maybe someone else (mybroadwaybaby ?) from that class can pitch in.>>

Well, after 2 years of MPULSE, one thing my kid has for sure, are friends at schools all over the country! So in answer to the question about where they go, they go everywhere!

MPULSE changed drastically from my daughters junior year experience to her senior year…i think the first year there were 27 kids, the second year there were nearly 40, i think…the size made things quite different.

Both of her MPulse classes had 2 girls each accepted to UMICH…as far as i remember, all but a very few applied to Michigan after MPulse…I think the first year there were 2 or 3 boys, the second year was similar. I think after 2 years at MPulse, she currently knows 6 or 7 of the current class of boys…all the boys who were juniors with her the first year were admitted and attended.

I can tell you for sure that she has friends from MPulse at: NYU (i think 3 or 4 went there from her 2nd time), CCM, Carnegie Mellon, Michigan, Point Park, Boston University, Yale, Indiana, Cal State Fullerton, Baldwin Wallace, Penn State(i think 4 went there one year), Syracuse, Ithaca, OCU, Texas State, Florida State and 1 currently at Northwestern (momcares daughter) and my daughter is at Webster…so big names and small lesser known schools.

…the other thing to note is that some kids auditioned for MT and Acting, some only for MT and some only for Acting…and a couple did completely unrelated studies!

We are big MPulse fans in our family. Those experiences changed our kid’s experience and understanding of who she was as a performer and person…she is still reaping the rewards of her time spent with Professor Wagner and all of those kids…and some will be friends for a lifetime. From a statistical point of view (and my view), going to Mpulse does not help you “get in” to Michigan as a female…maybe it is statistically more likely as a male…however, don’t choose it for that reason, choose because its an awesome program with long lasting results.

I would say that thing that stuck out to me about kids at MPULSE was that they were all extremely talented (in different ways), but beyond that they were truly interesting, well-rounded and very, very engaging and bright…into to all kinds of stuff outside of MT.

Good luck to all of you whose kids have applied!!!

Did you go with your daughter and drop her off at the school? It appears that you need to get yourself from the airport to the campus. How far is that? How did she feel about the intensity of the program vs more of a summer camp feel since it appears it also offers recreational opportunities. I am also wondering about the fact that all the students are about the same age. Some other programs have various ages. Was that a plus? I’ve asked this before, but what about the weather and a dorm with no air conditioning? How miserable was that? We live where there is NO humidity. Was it 2 to a room? It also says no cell phones? How did that work out? Did you go there on the last day? Thanks!

Hi Theatremomma!

<did you="" go="" with="" your="" daughter="" and="" drop="" her="" off="" at="" the="" school?=""></did>

We did take her the first time…she was quite young and we didn’t know at the time that MPULSE kids can actually arrive the day before and spend an extra night in the dorm. We are from Seattle, so there really is just one non-stop flight a day…she couldn’t arrive in time for the start of things on Sunday, so we arrived Saturday evening instead. The second year, she went on her own. The MPulse folks provide a shuttle to and from the airport for kids arriving on their own.

<it appears="" that="" you="" need="" to="" get="" yourself="" from="" the="" airport="" campus.="" how="" far="" is="" that?=""></it>

Its about 30 minutes or so from DTW to the campus…but as i said above, MPulse provides a shuttle for kids flying in on their own.

<how did="" she="" feel="" about="" the="" intensity="" of="" program="" vs="" more="" a="" summer="" camp="" since="" it="" appears="" also="" offers="" recreational="" opportunities.=""></how>

It absolutely does not resemble a summer camp in any way…it is rigorous and intense 24/7 in my opinion! There were 2 swimming “outings” on the two sundays…one evening they went to the Ann Arbor Arts Festival…otherwise, outside of class time and meal time…there is LOTS of work to be done…“homework” in song analysis…and practicing material, etc…it is a really intense experience!

<i am="" also="" wondering="" about="" the="" fact="" that="" all="" students="" are="" same="" age.="" some="" other="" programs="" have="" various="" ages.="" was="" a="" plus?="">
<i am="" also="" wondering="" about="" the="" fact="" that="" all="" students="" are="" same="" age.="" some="" other="" programs="" have="" various="" ages.="" was="" a="" plus?="">

Of course the MPulse folks can change this year to year, but it seems there are only 1 or 2 rising juniors each year…the others are all about to be seniors…i thought it was appropriate, as they are largely there to learn how to improve in performing and auditioning…almost all are planning to audition for college BFA programs, so they are very like minded. It also gives kids a feel for how competitive they are on a national pool…those are the kinds of kids they will both compete with and go to school with…

<i’ve asked="" this="" before,="" but="" what="" about="" the="" weather="" and="" a="" dorm="" with="" no="" air="" conditioning?="" how="" miserable="" was="" that?="" we="" live="" where="" there="" is="" humidity.=""></i’ve>

We don’t have humidity either…and it hardly gets over 80 here! My daughter did fine…we bought her a fan…many others brought fans as well. i don’t thinkit was a huge deal for our daughter.

Was it 2 to a room?

One girl, our D’s first year asked for and got a single, she was repeating…but otherwise, yes it was 2 to a room

It also says no cell phones? How did that work out?

I think all the kids are freaked out by that…as are some parents…but it really is a great thing. They focus on each other and what they are doing…in a way they could never do if they could text…they really are very serious about that rule. The kids do have phones in they’re rooms…they got the “old fashioned” experience of being tethered to a phone! WE sent her with a phone card and she called several times with updates…

Did you go there on the last day?
We did go both years…the presentation was quite different the second time. Both years, Proffessor Wagner stressed that it was not a show…we could not video tape it or sound record it…the first year it was a bit like a showcase in rehearsal. The kids were dressed up, there were a couple of big dance numbers…3 i think! And then all the kid’s sang a short cut of a song Mr Wagner had given them…a couple of kids sang full songs. The second year was interesting too…just different. There were way too many kids to have every one sing. There were still a couple of big group dance numbers with singing…the remaining time was as if we were onlookers to the typical events of our students mornings at Mpulse. I enjoyed it. Parents were basically watching a class…a few kids sang…the only downside is the black box, though very nicely outfitted, is hot!!! The room was very full.

You are welcome…hope it goes well for your student!

Thanks!

@mybroadwaybaby - 1 currently at Northwestern (momcares daughter)

I’ll bet your D knows at least 4-5 kids at NU from Mpulse… though maybe she doesn’t know they’re there? ;-D

@theatremomma - I did fly there with D as I recall, but not everyone does and it works out fine. We ran around and bought a lot of last minute stuff for her dorm (including a fan) so I was glad to have been there. MPulse was pretty intensive training – not like a summer camp. ;-D It was 2 to a room, and D wasn’t thrilled with her roommate but learned from that. It was no cell phones her year, but I’d heard that changed last year. I don’t know what they’ll do in that regard this year.

Thanks for all the great info!

Last year they were allowed to keep cell phones because the university was going to remove the landlines from the rooms. As it turns out, the landlines weren’t removed before MPulse began, but it didn’t really matter… they have very little time to spend on the phone. They leave their cell phones in the dorm and they can only call/text during breaks and before lights out. Last year it was extremely hot and a fan was essential (even for a kid from a humid area).

It was a wonderful learning opportunity. All the kids were going into their senior year and that was perfect. They were all on the same page- deciding whether or not they want to pursue a BFA, BA or general studies in college. It was intense and Mr. Wagner is a genius (according to my child).

I highly recommend arriving the night before if possible. We didn’t know about this option and moving in that morning was very rushed. I attended the closing performance which was like watching a snippet of the various classes. Each group also performed a short dance and Mr. Wagner gave an overview of the workshop and advice for the future.

After this we went to lunch with a few of the other students and their families. It was fun getting to know one another and learning what everyone planned for the future.

What kind of experience do the students auditioning for MPULSE have?

My son has attended a performing arts school from the 6th grade until the 10th grade majoring in Musical Theatre. He has been in a dozen or more shows, both Musicals and straight Theatre. He works during the summer as a stage performer at an amusement park. He has participated in 7 flash mops and sung at a local music festival twice.

Does that sound like what the other students have done as well?

I just got off the phone with Robin from MPLUSE. I called to make sure they had recieved my son’s Letter of Recommendation. They had.

She said there were 200 or so applicants and that there are 40 spots. I asked if a rising Junior had a chance of getting in and she said “absolutely”.

She said acceptances would be delivered by MAIL not email or phone calls. She said they would go out on March 30th.

@TheatreTennessee-FYI My D applied last year to MPulse and she did receive a letter in the mail that went out on March 30th, but that was a “no”. The acceptances were done approx. two weeks earlier by email. Unless they plan on doing things differently this year, that was how it went down last year. Also, my D is applicant #390 this year; so there are probably double the amount of applicants you thought there were “fighting” for those 40 spots. Good luck to your son and all others that have applied!!!

I was accepted yesterday to the Tisch New Studio Summer Music Theatre program! Haven’t heard back from MPulse yet.

Hi! I’m a junior and I just got accepted into Broadway Theatre Project, but I also applied to MPulse. I’m in a dilemma because I have to pay a $700 non-refundable fee to BTP by March 26th, and MPulse sends out their letters on March 30th. Is MPulse significantly better than BTP? I don’t know whether I should gamble with MPulse or if I should email them and explain my circumstances. I applied last year, but being a rising junior, I was rejected. Help!!

I am in a similar dilemma with Tisch. I have to confirm by the 23rd, but am not supposed to hear back from MPulse until the 30th and Cherubs on April 1.

I hope I don’t double post- I got an error with the first one. We had the same dilemma last year. Mt son was a sophomore and got in BTP. I emailed Mpulse and they would not tell me early. We accepted BTP and later found out he did not get in Mpulse- good call. This year he is got in TPAP and we have to accept before we hear from Mpulse. I may try to email and see what I can find out but I am pretty sold on TPAP. I have heard wonderful this about Mpulse but to spend a really fun summer with fabulous Broadway and TV stars. That’s just plain fun! You can’t go wrong with either. They are very different so pick what you would like to do with your summer. BTP may give you a few extra days.

@nickacostello, my D is in a similar situtation with Tisch and MPULSE . . . but her acceptance letter for Tisch said she didn’t have to confirm until April 9. Does yours say March 23? If so, I wonder why different? Hope we all hear from MPULSE soon – good luck!

You all should be hearing very soon! I heard back last year on March 14th.

qjo2882 when you got your response on March 14th was it an acceptance? Did it come by mail or email?

It was an acceptance through email. :)
