haha whoops, i typed mine. hopefully they don’t hold it against me. i think my stats are good enough to get accepted into garcia.

What are your stats?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1462697-chance-mit-caltech-stanford-ivies.html

Well Garcia’s application does not ask for awards, test scores, etc, so it’s really your essays that matter. How did your essays look?

my essays were fine, when i emailed she mentioned " If you have any standardized test scores (e.g. SAT, PSAT, ACT, SAT II, AP) to submit, you can make a photocopy of your official report and mail it/e-mail it to us." so I sent her a lot of my test scores and awards.

If you included a resume of any sorts, because they do not want anything additional, that looks bad.

My friend applied las year to Garcia as his backup; he had amazing stats (siemens regional finalist, 2400, etc) but because he included a resume, he did not get in while less accomplished people did.

yeah i didn’t include a resume. i only included sat, sat ii, psat, AP, and amc 12 scores

The reason he didn’t get in isn’t because he chose to include scores, I doubt that they would do that. He probably didn’t get in because his essays weren’t good because it was his backup. It seems very unlikely that they would deny an applicant for including stuff…more likely that he didn’t express serious interest in the program.

And Mr. Mitboundyolo, I emailed the director, and she said it was absolutely okay if we typed our essays.

@mitboundyolo

I emailed them about attaching resumes…
This was their response:

“Thank you for your interest in the Garcia Summer Research Program. To answer your question, we welcome students to attach resumes highlighting their achievements both academic and in the community. I hope this helps answer your question.”

haha that’s a great name “mitboundyolo” so glad they won’t hold typing the essays against me

The decision will be announced around 3/15.

Hey guys,

How many people there of the 60-70 do you think are there to do Intel projects (and Siemens)? As I was reading through the abstracts on the website of the kids from summer '12, it appears that many of the kids worked in pairs or triplets, while others worked alone. Also, some of the projects are not as serious as others. As in, some could have probably been done in one week (the results of some experiments take a while), while others could have barely finished in the 7. Can someone who has already attended comment on this? Do you guys think they give you a choice to work alone or not, or you just do what they tell you? Because as far as Intel STS goes, there are no “partner” projects. How does it work for people who want to do intel STS but don’t want to work in pairs??

can anyone compare Garcia/Simons/Clark in terms of prestige, quality of research, quality of the students/mentors, and the research awards/college admissions garnered by the students?

This is what it seems like to me from talking to counselors, looking on college confidential, etc.

Clark is first by far in all categories. Extremely prestigious and selective (only 12 kids), mentors are focused first and foremost on you, college admissions are exceptionable, probably comparable to SSP and nearing RSI (still not RSI).

Then it seems Garcia is next prestigious, as I believe (not sure) that it is more selective. It seems that students win a decent amount of awards, and I’ve heard its a fun program too.

Simons is less prestigious and well known, but I’ve heard that the mentors are a strength of the program (perhaps in comparison to Garcia).

Perhaps we can get some former participants to comment? I’d honestly be happy at any of them!

oh yeah you mentioned ssp. the price tag on that program is what brings me to question my initial impression about its prestige. any thoughts? how does it line up, especially from the college admission viewpoint, when compared to the above mentioned programs? not that i would make a decision solely based on competitiveness/prestige.

3/15 is just a few days away. we should hear back soon :-)

so excited to hear back from stony! T-2 days!

what does Garcia look at in an applicant in odrer for him/her to be accepted ?

what does everyone think of the acceptances? Is it easy to get in?
