MSA for CivEng

Based on my calc the kid’s MSA is 4448. (4.02 SLO GPA, 1410 SAT). Retaking the SAT in August so might be a minor bump up, but this is about what it’s going to be. Odds for CivEng?

I would say that your kid’s stats are good for Civil Engineering. I was admitted to Cal Poly this year with lower stats than your son/daughter, so I think he/she should be alright. Just remind them to keep their grades up through senior year and they will be okay. I know that the other engineering majors are more competitive, so be wary of that.

Rule of thumb for most prospective engineering majors is an MCA score of 4700 or higher makes you a strong candidate. Civil Engineering has a higher acceptance rate than CS/ME/BME and Aerospace so he is definitely a contender but a higher SAT can only help.

Saw an MCA of 4200+ for an OOS Civil Engineering acceptance Fall 2017 and a 4630 MCA of in-state acceptance.

Thanks. Obviously 4700 is not attainable. Hope the 4500 ballpark works out.

My daughter is an incoming civil engineering major. I don’t know her score. Sorry. Her gpa was a 4.2 and a 31 ACT. If you took high school math in middle school, make sure you put it on the application. Also, Cal Poly is expecting about 1000 more students this year but will reduce the numbers for next year’s class so your score will need to be even stronger.
