MSU Transfer Spring 2020

Hi!
I know it make be a tad bit early to start applying/thinking of the Spring 2020 semester, but hey why not right?

This thread is for those doing the same, it’d also be great to get to know each other, celebrate our accomplishments, acknowledge our short comings, and hope for a better college experience!

I’m transferring from a 4-year institution, but will be studying abroad in Italy for my Fall 2019 sem. I’ve been paying mostly out of pocket at my current school and I’m hoping to get a better scholarship/financial aid package at MSU.

My Background:

Rising Junior: 3.9 GPA, 60 credits fulfilled, all transfer requirements completed (except 1)

Major & minor: International Business Marketing and Apparel, Textiles, & Merchandising

Involvement on campus: Michigan State Speech Finalist, President of Collegiate Entrepreneurs Association, etc.

Volunteer work (200+ hours)

LaGrant Foundation Scholar (two-time recipient)

Accepted into NYU Stern (8 transfers accepted out of over 1,000 applicants) (wasn’t able to afford it though)

Business Owner/Content Creator/Influencer

Strong essay.

I understand that I have a pretty fair chance, but my transferring really depends on the financial aid package I’ll receive. I made sure to make it known that I wouldn’t be depending on my parents for support and I really hope they take that into consideration.

Hello! I am a incoming freshman going to an in-state private university. I would like to transfer to MSU for second semester. I already got accepted as a freshman, do you think I would have a higher chance for transfer?

MSU doesn’t offer very good financial aid for transfer students, unfortunately. I have been financially independent from my parents since I was 17 (I’m now 20, almost 21). I was an out of state transfer, using my own money to move to Michigan and afford college. I was only given federal grants and Stafford loans.

I’d say you have a really high chance of being accepted, but if you’re relying on a good financial aid package in order to actually transfer to MSU, you likely won’t get it.

If accepted, what major would you be looking at?

I know MSU does give out transfer scholarships for those who have in-state residency and/or are transferring from a community college or 4 year institution. They’re limited, but I may be eligible for the Trustee scholarship which I’ve heard covers up to full tuition. May be a long shot, but yah girl’s been praying lol.
I applied as a Marketing major with the hopes of a International Business minor. I may or may not take on Apparel studies as well, but I’m still thinking about it.

I know they have scholarships for transfer students, but at my transfer orientation this past summer, out of 200+ people, no one got any scholarships from MSU. I’m just speaking from experience, typically the scholarships are already taken by the people who transfer in for a Fall semester. Not trying to be rude, just speaking the reality of it from experience!

I’m not sure if you’ve heard, but they changed some admission requirements for Broad, starting in the fall. And, MSU very rarely accepts CSE101 (now CSE102) credit. You will have to go through the Broad admissions process, which is very selective.

Good luck!

Completely understandable, thanks for letting me know. And I’m super glad that they’ve decided to get rid of the CSE101 requirement, it was the only course I hadn’t taken b/c they don’t offer it at my current school. I’ll keep hoping though, and I’ll check in when I hear any news :).

You’ll still have to take CSE102! I’m not entirely sure if they’ll accept transfer credit, though.

@cassandrarose2 I would be applying for computer science as a major. However, since I am a freshman, I would not be applying to college of engineering yet. I have to apply next year

Ok, some quick questions for someone with more knowledge about this process than I. My application status says …
“Your application to Michigan State University has been received and will be reviewed once all materials have been received and processed.
You MUST update your academic record by submitting grades for any completed, currently enrolled, and anticipated courses. All previous grades and current courses from U.S.-based institutions MUST be submitted via your online student portal. Paper transcripts must be submitted to our office for any international institution in order to update your academic record. If the transcript is not in English, a translation must be provided.
We cannot render a final decision on your application until the above actions have been completed.”
… however, I already submitted my grades about 2 weeks ago. Is this message just standard? Also, for those applying for spring, has anyone got decisions and how long had that taken?

@ColoFTW Lol I can actually answer this one! Admissions decisions for transfers can range between 8 to 12 weeks after all documents have been received. I submitted mine around the end of the July and my portal states the same message. Also, recently, I met with someone on the admissions committee and he said he wouldn’t start reviewing spring transfer apps till September  they’re still finalizing fall transfers.

Application is now under review!
Gosh this is stressful x.x

Portal just changed to “Your application to Michigan State University is currently being reviewed.” It’s been 7 weeks since I turned in my app, but feels like it’s been forever lol Good luck you guys!!

@ColoFTW which college/major did you apply for?

Computer Science!

hiii all, I had applied for the fall 2019 semester (and was accepted) but since I’m an out of state resident (from nyc) my tuition ended up being 55k a year. I decided to turn the acceptance down and reapply for the spring semester with a different major even though I know I won’t get any more financial aid lol. anyway, my application is now under review but I still don’t expect a decision until at least mid October, based on how long it took to find out the decision the last time around.

@kmalin I would think that the application process would be a little faster since there are significantly less people applying to transfer for spring semester versus applying for fall semester when you have both high school students as well as transfers. I was honestly hoping that I would hear back within 2 weeks from when my status changed

@kmalin I love NYC!! Also wow 55k a year is a lot, I got into NYU Stern and had to pay maybe about 10k less than that. Still expensive, but MSU what are you doing? lol Anyways I really hope we hear by mid October!

@ColoFTW within 2 weeks would definitely be ideal! I really don’t think there are too many Spring applicants so hopefully our timeline’s shorter.

I finished applying end of August due to changing community colleges and Just had my application status change to under review-has anyone heard anything?

@jengriff2021 I’m going on about 1.5 weeks right now and I have yet to get a decision.
Edit: 1.5 weeks since my application changed to “under review”.
