Multivariable vs. Stats senior year

I'm a junior currently taking Calc BC. Got a 94 first semester. I have the option of taking either Multivariable or Stats AP next year.

However, multivariable is at the local college. I need to drive there at seven in the morning, sit for two hours, and then drive back (it's a 3 day / week class). The last person who took multivariable as a senior barely managed to get a C (and he got a 5 on the AP BC test).

I'm applying to three ivies (Yale, Brown, Princeton) and Stanford.

I'm not really a math person, so I'm not sure whether it's worth it for me to take multivariable. Will taking stats AP hurt me?

My senior schedule is:
English Lit AP
Physics AP
Spanish AP
Gov AP
(Math..?)

Any opinions/help would be great.

well, that person is different. You could do better than him in Multivariable Calculus unless that person you mentioned has a strong affinity for math well known at your school.

Stats AP - when college sees Calculus BC and Stats AP after that, it would agree why. so, don’t worry if taking ap stats will hurt you.

^He was a strong math student and scored a 5 on the BC exam.

Not sure if I understood the second part of your post. Are you saying taking AP stats won’t hurt my chances? I’m still taking the most rigorous schedule available at my school I guess…

Colleges shouldn’t look at stats as a slacker class then…?

oh, I meant that if college sees Calc BC and then Stats afterward in your transcript, it would understand. AP Stats I wouldn’t consider a slacker class. Besides, since you have taken Calc BC earlier than you’re supposed to, college will commend you on that.

Colleges don’t look at any AP’s as a slacker class. It definitely won’t hurt you to take AP Stat because your high school doesn’t offer multivariable. The only thing that may be a notable difference is that some schools accept credits from a local college and they don’t from an AP class. My sister went to Carnegie Mellon and they accepted her statistics credit from a local college even though they don’t accept the AP Stat credit.

I was in a pretty similar situation to you. I’m a senior now, but I took IB HL 2 math (more or less equivalent to calc bc - I got a 5 on the bc test) last year. First semester this year I took multivariable calc at the university of minnesota, this semester I am taking linear algebra and differential equations. Like you, the only math class left for me at my school was AP stats. At my school it is a joke class. I didn’t want to take it because almost everyone else in it is bad at math and has chosen to take it instead of calculus. I did not want to not take any math because I really like it and plan on studying it in college.

I take my math class at night and it is kind of a pain. There are so many times when I wish I didn’t have to go. My class first semester was great, but this one is really bad and I have a hard time staying awake sometimes. I had originally hoped to take the class before school, but that wasn’t possible with scheduling. I am supposed to have a release hour, but due to some scheduling stuff I have an aid hour instead. I’m still glad I’m taking my math class because I really do like math, but if you don’t, I would think twice about it. Besides the 4 hours a week in class and the extra homework, I also spend almost 3 hours a week on transportation. It also prevents me from doing things sometimes.

If you really want to take math, I’d go for the multivariable calc class, but if you don’t care about math so much, I would just take another rigorous class (not stats) that interests you in your school

^Stats AP is the only class I have left. This is a hard choice. I’m running XC too, so that will take time.

i took ap stats instead of going the multivariable calc and am regretting it big time now

I wish I had your dilemna. I took BC in 11th, and I’m in AP Stats now. I would have taken MVC any day if I had the choice, but if you’re not a math person, just take Stats and go with it. It will not hurt you in ANY way. You’re good =]

MVC ftw.

10 char

Stats AP for the most part is a joke and is basically knowing how to work your calculator and the very basic concepts of stats (no ANOVA, no explication of how certain rules are derived, blah blah). I believe MVC would set you apart from the pack a little more. A good grade in that would mean you are good at math. A good grade in AP Stats would mean that you understand the basic concepts of statistics. However, if you do well in MVC you could well in Stats and the colleges probably would know that, making MVC the best choice for distinguishing yourself if you think you can handle the workload.

Since you mentioned you’re not a very strong math person I would take AP Statistics. Don’t worry I have heard from many students that it is a difficult course while others have told me that it is easy. Either way taking AP Statistics will not hurt you in any way because you are still challenging yourself by taking all AP classes. Good luck.

Multivariable!!! I took that alongside Stat, so I was never really in your situation, but I would go multivariable all the way! It was such an awesome class and I learned so much. It especially helped me with Physics, which is what you’re taking too

Hey guys! I have been given the opportunity to take Advanced Calculus 1 at a University. I have already taken AP statistics and AP calculus BC and made 5’s. I have not taken Multivariable calculus though. Would I be ready to take Advanced Calculus 1? Thanks

I’m pretty sure Calc 1 is the same as Calc BC, so it might not be worth your time.

Calc AB covers more than most Calc I classes. Calc BC is supposed to cover Calc II.

Woops, yeah. silverturtle is right.
