Music courses for the non-conservatory student

Can students in A&S or Engineering take elective courses in music performance (eg, instrumental performance) or private lessons? What are the music-related opportunities for non-conservatory students? Student-run bands? jam sessions.....?

In addition to the double major option, JHU Homewood offers a minor in music and JHU students can take courses and lessons at Peabody.

Thank you, edad. I had tried to search from the other direction (Homewood), but it worked better to go at it from the Peabody website.

Let me refer you to a number of sources of information from current students that can probably help:

Hope this helps.

I'm a neuroscience major at Hopkins, and I took a music elective course last fall and private lessons at Peabody the entire year. The lessons are a really good option if you're interested in music -- you get to learn with some of the best teachers in the country and they're only $165/semester (30 min. lessons once a week). Generally, one has to audition to take lessons with a conservatory teacher, but one could take lessons from a preparatory teacher instead and pay the teacher's own lesson fee.

I'm also in the orchestra. It's a community orchestra and is comprised of people from all over Baltimore. Some of my friends have also formed bands and have had jam sessions together. There's plenty of people here interested in music. Hope this helps a bit!

Thanks, Daniel and schwack. Exactly the kind of info I wanted.
