Chances of Playing Music if Music Minor?

Anyone know what the odds are for participating in music programs if you are not a music major?

JHU has great opportunities. Any student can take lessons at Peabody. I believe all of the lessons are taught by the faculty and not by grad students. Since Peabody is a pretty solid conservatory, you would need to play at an advanced level in order to be accepted into performance groups. There are also performance opportunities on the Homewood campus. In addition both campuses have numerous informal groups.

You can also be a part of any of the Homewood ensembles without taking lessons at Peabody or minoring in music. Some examples (info on these musical opportunities taken from the JHU admitted student website's section on music):

Hopkins Symphony Orchestra: The HSO is a full symphony orchestra made up of students, faculty, staff, and community members. It holds four concerts per year, always with an esteemed guest artist. An audition is required, and auditions occur at the beginning of each school year. http://www.jhu.edu/jhso

Hopkins Wind Ensemble: The Hopkins Wind Ensemble is made up entirely of students. There is no audition required for the group, but there is an attendance policy to keep the performing quality high.

Hopkins Jazz Bands: Hopkins is home to two jazz groups?the Jazz Band and the Jazz Ensemble. Auditions are held for these groups. The Jazz Band performs more traditional jazz pieces, while the Jazz Ensemble features untraditional jazz.

Hopkins Pep Band: The pep band plays at all of the lacrosse and football games, home and away. It was formed in 1921 and is the oldest music group on campus. No audition is required.

The Peabody Conservatory: The Peabody Conservatory is one of the most prominent conservatories in the country, producing some of the best musicians to date. Peabody is also home to a very strong dance program. Part of the Johns Hopkins system, students at Homewood are able to attend concerts, audition for ensembles and orchestras, audition for private lessons, and take part in music classes given by Peabody.
