Music for Dance Audition?

Hi, I just realized that there is a solo dance component for the UArts audition. Luckily, my audition isn’t for a few months so I still have time. So, I was wondering if we were supposed to use music with or without lyrics? Musical or not? Thanks!

Also, I’m not sure if the music is supposed to be 2 minutes long, or if it is 2 minutes MAX, meaning a 1 minute 30 second dance is perfectly acceptable. Thanks again :)

The solo dance portion is optional. There were vocals on my son’s music… it should be no more than 2 minutes.

“Applicants auditioning on campus have the option of supplementing their group audition with a solo dance performance, which may not exceed 2 minutes in length. If you are auditioning at the Unifieds or a regional site, prepare a short solo dance that demonstrates your technical proficiency.”

Since I’m auditioning at a regional site, I have to prepare a solo. Anyway, thanks so much for the help!

I am wondering to hear what type of dance solo they are looking for…is it to see where you stand in dance technically? For example I am strong in ballet and love barre work etc. is that something I should include in my dance or should I be focusing on creating a musical theatre"y" dance? Any guidance would be wonderful both from people who have already auditioned and are getting ready to! Thank you all so much.

my dd just did her dance audition yesterday. The solo must be at least 2 minutes. My dd did a lyrical number that was 3 minutes long and they let her do the whole thing. I would do a solo that highlights your best form of dance. It sould like ballet is it. I know you cant do tap. But anything else goes. My dd is a jazz dancer and said the jazz was really tough so I would concentrate on taking some jazz classes. Good Luck.

Must be at least two minutes? That’s odd, it directly contradicts the website. Also, I think you auditioned on campus from what you said about a jazz combination since I’m auditioning at a regional site and there is no taught combination, which is why I started this post. lol But thanks for the information about that jazz combo, I’m sure someone doing the on-site audition will read this and benefit from the information. :)

My daughter auditioned at unifieds a few years ago. She brought her own music and it did have lyrics. It was not music from a musical and her number was jazz/modern oriented. Since they do not specify a particular style of dance, I would think that you should prepare a dance in a format that you feel will showcase your individual talent and demonstrate your ability to move. Break-a-leg!

I assume the audition takes place in a ballroom, and we will be dressed in our “audition attire”, should we choreograph our dance accordingly…I guess I am just confused on the logistics of it all.

I will pm you
