Music while Studying SAT?

Hi all,

So I listen to motivational / riveting instrumental music when studying for SAT, but analyzing the pros and cons i dont know if i should continue.

PROS

  • Sure instrumental music helps in focus
  • Blocks other sounds that could distract me

CONS

  • I dont get music on the SAT test… should I just find a super quiet place (or just deal with my mostly quiet)… I need to get used to a “SAT” environment and I’m not sure if this music will ruin my focus since SAT environment is basically no music

You should take your practice exams under “test conditions” (including timing, environment, etc.). But during prep itself if music helps what’s the harm? Your stamina during the practice tests as well as those results will help you figure out whether music is beneficial or not.

Believe it or not, “multi-tasking” is a myth, and you might think that the music you are listening to “helps you focus”, it actually does not. Form a habit of truly focusing on the one thing (prep for SAT) you are doing at the moment, ie, no external “distractions”, such as music, or any other electronics, you will find that you are actually a lot more productive (learning faster and better retention). Good luck.

Ok, two conflicting advice here. Any other advice?

I have an older brother who insisted on music while he did his AP work (his top degree was a PhD in physics from MIT so no dum-dum). I listened to plenty of classical music while studying but at times have found it a distraction when focusing on something particular. Don’t take blanket advice - go by what your practice tests (taken under “test conditions” so no music there . . . ) tell you.

I try to use music when practicing problems, but when doing actual tests, opt for no music.
