Musical Theater Double Major Honors?

My DD12 is interested in doing either a double major with something unknown and Musical Theater or in a MT minor. She will be NMF with a 35 ACT so she would qualify for the Honors program. She is also interested in the overseas program.

Our question is, is this something that would be possible to do at UA? We have only recently put UA on our college list and have heard that both the Honors program and the Theater program are excellent and are interested in finding out more, but live too far to visit before the audition date in November. We have mostly been staying away from audition colleges, because although I think she is a fantastic actress (naturally), and it is a definite passion for her, it has not been her entire life (she has very little dance, but a lot of voice) and we aren’t sure that she would be accepted into an audition program. If she didn’t qualify for the MT program, could she still take some courses in it as a minor and participate in performances?

Thanks for your help!

Hi and welcome!!! Where are you from?

Your D has amazing stats. Is she also a likely NMF?

I would apply soon because sometimes Bama gives bonus scholarships to early apps with high stats like your D’s if they’re not NMF.

If you haven’t already, please also post in our Roll Call State thread. :)

Admission is by audition – applicants prepare two songs and a monologue, and take part in a dance audition.

Doesn’t look like dance is needed, so that’s good.

If she didn’t qualify for the MT program, could she still take some courses in it as a minor and participate in performances?

I’m not sure that there is a minor…there may be but I’m not sure where to look.

Please contact the above person for more info. I’d hate to give you wrong info. :)

You mention an unknown second major. What are your D other strong subjects?

I’d also recommend that your D apply for the Computer Based honors. I think there was a Musical Theater major in CBH…or was it a dance major??? Anyway…all majors are welcome.

Welcome! I found this on the MT website:

It doesn’t look as though there is a minor, but she could still participate in theater.

But I agree with M2CK, contact the department with your concerns and see what they say.

*All departmental production auditions are open to the public as well as theatre majors. *

Great news! I guess they’re open to discovering some unknown Bama talent out there. :)

Also…the College of Engineering puts on 1-2 musical comedies every year. It’s open to all majors participating. My older son had a lot of fun with this. He (who is shy!) actually sang a few solos.

University of Alabama also has a great Opera Theater Department at the music school - it is separate from the musical theater department. My daughter and I met with Professor Houghtaling on her visit to Alabama last December also went to the Hilaritas featuring the University Singers (not all music majors) and UA studio Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. Professor Houghtaling is very encouraging and is willing to help with questions in this area.
