Musical Theater Prescreens - Class of 2022 (process/response)

@collegemom2000 If you are still interested and still have room on your calendar, might make sense to place a call. It is getting late in the game!

Just curious if anyone has thoughts are where schools cut their prescreens. We are traveling to a school that kept 800! Still very slim odds and a lot of time and money.

We heard at Unified that CMU had about 1200 prescreens and only cut 300… Others seemed more reasonable. I think it was Syracuse that said they cut them down by at least half.

@SAS0792 interesting that the schools are so different. Glad to be going but hate for my kid to fall in love with these campuses and towns. She was over the top for Elon only to receive a rejection. This is so hard!

We heard at the Penn State audition that they cut to about 300 from prescreens.

Per some info from NY Unifieds and other sources:

Pace had 1600 prescreens and called back 650.

Texas State only calls back 250 or so.

Michigan sees 400.

Elon sees about 400.

Ithaca sees about 500.

Syracuse cuts down much of its pool. (And it also has some pretty strict requirements that you need to fill. It’s the only school that my S ever considered that required 2 minutes of 2 songs.)

It is CMU’s first year screening. They may have been cautious about cutting this first year… those numbers may tighten in future years.

@SAS0792 re: CMU, I was worried about that. This was their first year of pre-cscreens, so I was wondering if they were going to be a little less aggressive with their cuts. Honestly, most people I have heard of (either here, in a FB group I’m in, or in real life) did NOT get cut.

@SAS0792 my daughter was cut from CMU as well as a few others I know. I will say though that she turned hers in on the very last day and I get the feeling they knew they had too many and just cut everyone who was at the end.

I will enjoy a rode trip with my D no matter what. The prescreen pass did give her a confidence boost, however I’m learning prescreens are not acceptances, just very small hurdles! Wishing you all the best off luck!!!

Same as @collegemom2000 said. My D was cut from CMU - submitted on final day and heard back quite quickly (within 2 days maybe) we joked that we doubted they even looked at it and were going to request a refund. Lol. Clearly they were overwhelmed. I know someone who submitted by morning of final day and heard back at 6:30 that same night that they didn’t pass!!!

CMU did advise to get in the presreen as early as possible as they were doing rolling reviews - unlike Elon for example. So the later you sent it in, the less chance you had of passing.

.

Re CMU, we were told that they received approx 2000 prescreens, and they cut 800 to arrive at 1200.

@MThopeful2022 our our story is even better. She submitted her pre-screen, and we then got an email that she had to apply before they would consider her (something that I know others didn’t have to do.) So she submitted the application and fee, and an hour later she got the rejection. Leaves me with a really bad opinion of that school since that was almost $200 down the drain in less than 24 hours.

^^^how frustrating @collegemom2000!

@collegemom2000 Dear heavens!!! Did you call the school’s general admissions department to let them know what happened?

Omg @collegemom2000 that sucks! Tbh i think some of these schools need to go to what otterbein does where you submit the prescreen FIRST & THEN if you pass you apply to the school. I mean what honestly is the point of applying unless your kid would attend for something else, which most would not go there except for MT , Acting etc. I mean they know dang on well the kids apply to a zillion schools and the hoops they jump thru. I mean if you’re requiring a prescreen then knock that out first. I do know last year one school was kind enough to give the waiver for the app fee so we didn’t have to pay.

@MThopeful2022 I guess I didn’t see the point. They said she had to apply before they’d look at the screen. I said there was a choice of “have you applied” or “not yet applied” but they said she had to apply regardless. It almost felt like a trick. I really don’t know what I’d say to get the money back.

@theaterwork Syracuse did the same thing. Saved us a few bucks. I just wish I hadn’t sent in the CSS and SAT grades beforehand (could have saved a few more bucks).

Seriously, how many of our kids go to CMU for anything else? Sure, its a great school, but the bulk of the kids going there are anything but artsy.
