Musical Theater Prescreens - Class of 2022 (process/response)

Good morning I am looking for advice with this theatrical resume that needs to be submitted for Syracuse and MIchigan, so perhaps those who have submitted could chime in? It’s a little different from other programs in which my D has submitted to…says “all theatrical productions” she has performed in. We have always been told the general rule of thumb for the regular resume is to include performances the last few years. Those of you who have submitted, how far back did you go with performance roles? Thanks in advance!

@jennifern1973 My S sent the resume of all productions… it’s long as heck, but I followed their guidelines. FYI we got notification that he passed the prescreen process yesterday.

@Dody5678 so happy for your son!

@mommafaria thanks for responding! if you don’t mind me asking, how far back did you go? My D doesn’t want to be obnoxious about it, but it does ask for ALL performances. Also, do you know if it was just one page? I just want to make sure she submits the correct resume. It’s her last prescreen to submit! Thanks

@jenniferm1973 - my MT D who just graduated helped her sister who is auditioning this year, and she said high school, unless it’s something major (regional theatre/tour/Broadway). You don’t need to list all the junior high/elementary shows they’ve ever done. And the resume really isn’t that important - it’s the audition that counts. Older D was sometimes asked in an audition about a show she had been in, or someone she had worked with that the person she was auditioning for knew. And also, I’m pretty sure I uploaded the wrong resume for one of younger D’s schools (she also does film acting & we have it in a different format), but she passed the prescreen, so guessing it didn’t matter.

@MTmom2017 Are you speaking specifically about Syracuse and Michigan? Those are the only schools who ask for a full theatrical resume. I do agree with you about this in general, but these two schools asked for a specific resume.

@jenniferm1973, yes, but if it fits, and you want to put more, go for it? Or double check with the school - most are happy to answer questions. We took off the junior shows and things D had done when she was in elementary school. I think we left 1 main role from 8th grade?

I recently saw a professional resume (of someone from a well regarded BFA program) that still listed a role from HS. Maybe it was a special role for them, but made me say hmmmmmm

@MTmom2017 I want to avoid calling the school, but might. I was thinking of including the early shows that my D had leads in. I feel now like I am overthinking and will just let her submit what she feels comfortable with.

@jenniferm1973 my s has 2 resume’s… one with all volunteer and theater experience and a second, with noteworthy roles from middle-high schools. The resume UM asks you to submit is the one that includes volunteer experiences. That one was 2 pages in length, the other resume is what he will bring with him to auditions.

D has two resumes - similar to @mommafaria. The “complete” resume includes jobs, volunteer experience and school/gymnastics awards and extracurriculars. The artistic resume is limited to shows, training and special skills. I just looked at my S resume (he is graduating college this year). He says all the HS shows, no matter how significant the roll, come off when they head to showcase.

For the Michigan prescreen results, did anyone get a ‘no’ on Friday? Any girls hear either way? Just trying to guess the Friday versus Monday notifications…

@TwoBusyMom have only heard from people who passed the prescreen.

@TwoBusyMom my D got an email stating that they didn’t have all of her academic stuff, in order to make a decision. Incredibly frustrating, as she applied and auditioned last year-and they were the one school who granted her NO shortcuts (waiving any or all of application, essays, test scores, fees); and even asked for additional stuff (last minute) this year. There is positively no way that grades/test scores would disqualify her. D is going to call them tomorrow.
Oh-also, my D has at least two friends who were notified that they did not pass, as well as several that did pass.

Thank you-- this one is a nail biter for us!
@owensfolks, how frustrating! You know we have our fingers crossed for your D too.

@TwoBusyMom and @owensfolks I would definitely call as they have been very helpful to us. I can only send the best wishes to both of your daughters as they continue with the process. May I ask when you sent in their material?

@owensfolks UMich was the last prescreen we were waiting on last year. We had all but given up only to discover it was the academic stuff holding up her notification. They were waiting on an updated transcript and a rec letter. Once we closed the loop she got her audition offer from them within a few days. They are sticklers about doing the full academic review along with the prescreen before they give an answer. Such a lot of hoops to jump through for a school that accepts 10 girls! But as I told my daughter last year you gotta throw that hat in the ring if you have a chance!

@TwoBusyMom my D got a no on Friday and spent most of the night crying about it. We have regrouped this weekend and she is feeling much better now. She has a low ACT score and we are wondering if that was the determining factor. Not a test taker at all and she has taken it many times.

@hmichmom so sorry to hear about your D but glad she is feeling better; if we get the same outcome, I’m going to be reminding my D about all the helpful thoughts on this board on ending up in the place you’re meant to be, and often not the one you first imagined.
@mommafaria D got her materials in sometime in September. I think they have everything requested on the academic side but will call them if we don’t hear tomorrow.

I can’t wait for my daughter to be done with this pre-screen process! The end is in sight! After the final 2 school she is submitting to this week, she will have applied to 18 total. It’s been non-stop for a couple of months and she has her first audition this weekend! It’s nice to come here and see people going through similar situations. Good luck to everyone!
