Musical Theatre at Amherst

I really like Amherst as a school. However, I want to study musical theatre, and I’m not sure how strong their program really is. I know the programs for this at middlebury, muhlenberg, and skidmore might be better. Can anyone tell me anything about studying musical theatre at Amherst?

My daughter was a Musical Theater major at UC Irvine Class of 2011. She looked at Amherst to find out about their MT program. If that is what you want to study, if that is your passion, Amherst is probably not the best school for you. At least in 2006 they did little if any musical theater. Most of the small liberal arts schools (including Carleton) do not seem to take those who want to major in Musical Theater terribly seriously. These small schools just do not have the critical mass do do MT seriously, and way too often someone who has the chops to do MT does not have the chops to handle the rigorous academics of a school like Amherst, or most small liberal arts schools for that matter. Look at UCLA, NYU, Syracuse, or Carnegie Mellon. All of those schools with give you a bang up MT program, and good academics as well. By going to UCI my daughter got all the MT she could handle, AND she was a Business Management minor. She could not have gotten what she got at Amherst, Middlebury, etc.
