Must-Do Things in College: Internships, Research, ...?

College is a big experience and for a lot of people, overwhelming. I was wondering if there were any sorts of things that you could start doing in college to further a career or work on grad school prospects.

Some people I know did internships at companies or did research with professors. Are there other things you can do (could be academic or extracurricular, doesn't matter)?

P.S.: First one to say 'GET DRUUUUNK' gets a very, very slow golf clap.

Be active in (and, if possible, hold leadership positions in) clubs/campus life/Greek/whatever...

Take classes outside your major

Go to at least a few sporting events, concerts & recitals, etc. put on by your school

Go on a road trip

There is no thing you have to do in college. It's the best 4 years of your life, don't waste it, but don't do things just because other people tell you to.

If you love science, do research.

If you love business, find an internship.

If you love art, then do what art people do and sit around all day doing nothing (jk)

But don't give in to peer pressure

Oh oh,

Don't do drugs...

if you want to work for the government.

I went to a social networking thing at my school recently, and one thing they discussed quite a bit was that the connections you make with your fellow students are extremely important. If you look around your campus, there are so many people with potential. So go out there and make connections, make friends, forge relationships, even with people who you may not normally hang out with. You never know who they may become and where those connections can take you.

Two things you might consider "must-do":
- Take classes just because they look interesting, not for any practical application
- Study abroad

It's different for everyone but it is best for most people to get an internship. Research is good too, depending on your major. Network with people, which can be anything from professional conferences to hanging out with people that are in your major.

Also, at some point you need to do something that, the next day, you can look back on and say "that was the dumbest thing I've ever done and probably ever will do." Because you're really running out of chances to do stuff like that and not face REALLY serious consequences.

have fun, please. Go to class, work hard, get your stuff done... but have fun. Don't over stress about things that won't matter nearly as much as you think they will in the long run.

Dare to step out of ''the box'' and explore - you never know what you will find out there.

Figure out who will most likely succeed. become friends with them.

hahahahaha lmao

balance fun and work. choose classes you're interested in, but also find out about the professor before you commit. getting tied down with an incompetent professor really sucks.
