I think that Cal Poly is a low reach for you and UCSB is a medium reach. I think you have an okay chance at getting into at least one of those. Good luck!

I don’t quite agree with michael2. It seems that you meet CalPolySLO’s requirements and have a good chance. It’s not like you’re applying for an Engineering major, so it’s no where as competitive.

As for UCSB, you hit the low average as shown in the freshmen profile. You have pretty good chances here. Make sure you have stunning/pretty good essays to get that last “umph.”

I have a higher GPA than you (3.9) but my SAT score is like 100 lower because I lived abroad for some time (Did terrible on Critical Reading). My math score was the same as yours though. Funny enough I also applied to UCSB and CalPoly SLO as Biochem/Molecular Bio and Biochem/Chem majors respectively.

I think you are right on the minimum for both schools. If it helps last year my cousin got into UCSB with a 1830 SAT and a 3.8 GPA into a Biochem major. At this point it really depends on the applicant pool. I think you have a pretty decent chance of getting into UCSB, like 70%. As for CalPoly I think you will be accepted without any issues.

Interesting though that your career path and GPA/SAT are very similar to mine.

Good Luck to All of You!
Question concerning my son who also applied as an undergrad Biology Major:
He’s only taken a couple AP classes & done some volunteer hours because of sports/music/work; will that hurt his chances at SLO & UCSB?
Unweighted GPA 3.93 Weighted 4.27
ACT composite 29
SAT 1930
Varsity sports/Audition Choir Member/Section Lead/Vice President Choir Council
(Note he has received acceptance to CSUF & SDSU alreaady)
Can you please “Chance” him? thanks

@QualityMOM - ECs dont really count for much at Cal Poly SLO and as long as he’s gotten A’s in those non-AP classes he’s fine (which it appears he has). Honestly with those grades and SAT/ACT, I would be shocked if he didnt get into Biology.

Science & Math GPA: 3.85 . ACT: 27 . SAT: 1220
Your son …GPA: 4.27 . ACT: 29 . SAT: [1930-writing] {writing doesnt matter}

@michael2 - you had said you had already gotten in ED, so why the asking for chance???

Thank you very much for for the reply and the awesome SLO link. I’m so very nervous for him. Funny that I’m the anxious one-checking the school admission portals twice a day. He feels when they send an e-mail then we’ll make the decision as a family!
Best of luck to all of you…

can anyone chance me for both those schools?

I forgot to update you with the awsome news! My son was accepted into SLO as you predicted! We will hear from UCSB 3/19 and I will update then…
Best of luck to everyone, I hope all of your hard work and studying has paid off as it has for my son

I have about the same stats as you, and I just got rejected from Cal Poly. Of course it’s all case-by-case, so this doesn’t mean you won’t get in. You have more AP/honors courses than I do, so maybe that will push you over!
Good luck!!
