hi everyone, i am curious to what you think my chances are at getting admitted to princeton.
i'm a senior, and i applied in december. i have a 3.3 gpa, i got a 28 on my act and i have yet to take the SAT subject tests which i will be taking in about 10 days. i'm a URM, both of my parents were born in somalia. i was born in toronto, i speak 3 languages, and i'd be the first in my family to go to college. i am secretary of interact service club, i'm in key club, student council, philosophy club, i was a junior mentor, and i am a senior mentor, and i tutored at a somali community association for over 4 years. i worked at my fathers store for 5 years and i currently work at a clothing store. in one of my essays, i wrote extensively about my volunteer work in kenya this summer, where i spent 6 weeks at a non profit. i took almost all honors and AP classes in high school, and i know that i am very intelligent, i just never worked as hard as i should. i just had my interview, and he LOVED me. what are my chances??? thanks~

oh and i’m a girl? if that helps lol

3.3 is pretty low for Princeton, even as a URM…as is a 28. The URM and trilingual/foreign always helps. Your volunteer work is AMAZING. I would say anyone has a chance…you might be a little under 50% in my experience.

On paper, you’re below average in the candidate pool, but being a URM/trilingual/foreign will help you gain back some ground. For your described ECs I can see a picture of a selfless individual, impressive on the tutoring at Somali community and volunteer work in Kenya btw, but everything else seemed to me a little mediocre.

One obvious weakness is a lack of passion to pursue academic accomplishments (especially in a certain field). There’s probably more to you than this, but I don’t really see you as someone who would make use of a strong academic environment. Your GPA and ACT are among the indicators. In short, I didn’t feel like you’ve shown me your interests in “studying”. Except maybe your course load, but again, that is downplayed by your 3.3GPA (un-weighted right?)

It’s not going to be a good first impression, with the adcom, but I hope you cast a spell in your essays. Best of luck, 25% for me. Anything can happen.

More importantly: it seems unlikely that a motivation to work will appear from nowhere. Princeton requires a LOT of work…not to be rude, but you may want to consider that it is the case that Princeton may not be your best fit!

Yes, why Princeton? It doesn’t really seem to fit you that well…

That being said, academically you are below average. Personally and EC wise you’re pretty well off. I’d give it less than 25%.
