Also, all the classes I have taken are mostly Honors, I exceed expectations in both science and I take a lot of art classes. I understand my chances of getting into Tisch are low, and I just wanted help seeing what other schools have Commucating & Advertising Art majors. If you go to Tisch or know people who go there, can you give me your advice? I know I'm above adverage for their SAT score, but my GPA is WAY below the required 3.6, but since it's their art school, does my GPA count that much? Or does my portfolio and essay count more? I know Tisch is AMAZINGLY HARD to get into HELP PLEASE!

Really? I always thought they were in Tisch. I want to do Commercial/Advertising Art. Does this mean Steinhardt would be easier to get into? Please help me! Someone told me I was overqualified...but my GPA is crap. If I have a great portfolio, does it mean I can get in?

I'm sure you can find contact information there for someone you could call and speak to about the information you're seeking. In general, gpa is very important for NYU admissions, even for programs which require a portfolio/audition/artistic review.

Hi Abstractname,
I have essentially the same gpa as you do, and much lower SAT scores and I was accepted to NYU Tisch drama just recently. They truly are looking for the whole person, not just the numbers. As long as you have a good audition/portfolio review I don't see why you wouldn't get in. That said, who really knows what makes them "tick."

If you are looking into Steinhardt I'd suggest REALLY looking into their program. It's rigorous and you will do a lot of studio classes and have to keep up with NYU liberal Arts courses. Essentially you will be doing a lot of work over your next four years. People in the program say it follows a generalist curriculum where you will be learning a variety of mediums. There is no main focus in the art department, as it teaches you how to be an artist as a whole, not in any particular area. If commercial art is your main focus, maybe you should look into SVA or Parsons. Those are very well known schools and are great in that field and is still in NY!

GPA/SAT scores are extremely important, but not as important as your artist's statement/portfolio. They admit around 50-60 kids each year into the program, so it's safe to say you need to have an awesome GPA, SAT[which you do], porfolio, essay, and art-related extracurriculars and job experience.
