My Chances for University Park?

According to the bubble chart, I'm on the border between yellow and blue, so I'm not sure how worried I should be about being deferred to a branch campus. I sent in my application 9/7.

Personal:

Gender: Male
Race: Caucasian
State: DE

Stats:

Unweighted GPA: 3.5
Weighted GPA: 4.4
Class rank: Top 14%
SAT: 2030 (690 CR, 710 M, 630 W)
APs: European History (3), Calculus AB (TBA)
IBs: Psychology SL (6), Math SL (5), Physics SL (TBA), Bio HL (TBA), Spanish SL (TBA), History of the Americas HL (TBA), English HL (TBA)

I have taken the most rigorous courses available to me. Freshman year, besides two mandatory electives, I took all IB-MYP classes, which are weighted the same as honors classes. Sophomore year, besides two mandatory electives, I took 1 IB class (Math), 1 AP class (Euro), and the rest IB-MYP/honors. Junior year I took all IB classes (the ones listed above minus Physics, plus TOK). Senior year, I am taken 6 IB classes (the ones listed above minus Math, plus TOK), 1 AP (Calculus), and have a study hall.

ECs (no leadership positions):

Tennis: Grades 10-12
Mock Trial: Grades 11-12
Radio: Grades 11-12
Math League: Grades 9-12 (on the A team; won the conference in grade 9)
Academic Bowl: Grades 10-12
NHS: Grades 11-12
Newspaper: Grade 12

Prospective major: Meteorology

The Bubble Chart uses weighted GPA, so you are way into the blue. You should be fine applying to Eberly for Meteorology.

Does not seem possible to me to have a 3.5 unweighted gpa and 4.4 weighted with any sort of generally accepted grading system. Maybe I am wrong, but seems you would have to have near a 4.0 unweighted gpa to approach a 4.4 weighted one.

@PennsyDad:

At my school, honors/MYP courses are on a 4.5 scale, and IB and AP courses are on a 5.0 scale. Not including senior year, I have taken 8 classes on the 4.5 scale, 5 on the 4.0 scale, and 9 on the 5.0 scale. I’m sure that if my school’s grading system isn’t generally accepted, then PSU will make necessary adjustments.

It appears to me that one would have to take essentially all AP and IB (5.0 scale) classes to raise a 3.5 to a 4.4, but maybe my math skills have faded over the years. Best of luck to you.

Is it worth it for me to apply to Schreyer? I’ve definitely been considering it, but I figured that my odds of getting in were low, and it wouldn’t be worth it to do all the supplemental work just to be rejected.

You know those high honors students who are highly involved in their community, 4.2 GPA ,president of their band, lettered in a varsity sport, are highly self-directed, competitive and motivated? Those are the people Schreyer is admitting. If you think you want to be part of that community, and continue to be highly self-motivated, highly interested in academics and enrichment and engagement on a personal and professional level, then you should apply. Schreyer is not for everyone – getting in is hard, staying in is demanding. It is more about personal goals and outlook and less about gpa. Schreyer scholars register for classes first, have special dorms, travel and enrichment opportunities galore, but the app is a lot of work, by design.
