Do you live and go to a high school in the CSU Long Beach service area? Your guidance counselor should know this information. If you are outside the CSULB service area I am afraid your chances for admission are extremely poor with a CR+M score of 950 and a GPA of 2.9. While those scores technically qualify you for admission to a CSU, CSULB is considered an impacted campus and can set much higher minimum standards for applicants outside of their service area. My guess is that if you are not in their service area you would need a SAT CR+M score of at least 1200 and a GPA of 3.5 to have a chance of being admitted to CSULB. If you are applying from the CSULB service area your situation is not so grim but it will depend on whether or not the school is admitting all students in their service area who meet the basic minimum criteria for admission to a CSU, which you do, or if they have so many applicants from their service area that they are now also setting higher minimum standards for admission of in-service area applicants as well. The average SAT CR+M score for admitted students at CSULB is probably around 1,100 and GPA over 3.0.

CSU admissions are highly automated. The computer is given your SAT scores, GPA and service area status, does a calculation, and generates an acceptance or rejection letter based on pre-determined criteria.

I don’t understand what all the talk is about CSULB beign hard to get into. I believe CSULB’s low acceptance rate has more to do the high number of unqualified students applying to it. For example, the average SAT for incoming freshmen is 1025, lower than Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, and SDSU and all of UCs. According to the CSU, only 47 percent of CSULB’s incoming freshmen are proficient in both English and math. That’s also lower than the aforementioned campuses plus Sonoma and Humboldt. Over half of incoming freshmen have to take remedial math or English classes. Looking at the low acceptance rates is misleading. An average student with a 3.4 GPA, and a 1,000 on the SAT should be able to make it into most majors. I think the acceptance rate is more a reflection of number and the quality of it’s feeder high schools. Don’t be intimidated. Just apply here and a few other UCs and CSUs.
