GPA : 3.89/4.00
SAT :math 740 english 560
toefl :90
I’m an international student.
I was looking at El and sisn’t understand how it works.
My goals is to have a major of CS or CE
Can anyone help me calculate my chances Thanks
EI= Eligibility index is a calculation of the capped weighted CSU GPA x 800 + SAT Math + EBRW.
CSU capped weighted GPA is your a-g course requirements taken 10-11th grades and there is a cap 8 extra honors points for each semester of AP or IB courses taken during this time. Since you are a International applicant, the GPA may be different in the calculation. Is your GPA converted to a 4.0 scale or do you get grades based on a 4.0 scale?
So for example your CSU GPA is 3.89x800 + 1300= 4412 is for CS
For Computer Science, you needed at 4725 EI for an acceptance last year.
For Computer Engineering, the calculation is slight different with more emphasis on your SAT Math score so
SAT Math * 3) + (EBRW)]/2 = COE total SAT score
Then plug in our COE SAT score into the regular formula, so I get 1390 for your COE total SAT score
Then (3.89 x800) + 1390= 4502.
For Computer Engineering you needed a 4700 EI. These EI thresholds do fluctuate from year to year but consider these majors out of reach based on the above calculations. You might want to call admissions to confirm that as an International applicant that these numbers are correct.

For SLO, they use 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation with a capped weighting of 8 extra honors points for AP/IB courses taken 10-11th grades. CS is their most competitive major so based on the School of Engineering averages:
SLO GPA of 4.21 and SAT of 1481, CS is going to be a Reach. You might have better odds with CE since the acceptance rate is slightly higher than CS. They do not use EI but MCA points to rank applicants. Here is a link for the MCA point calculation See post #52 for the explanation.
You might want apply to Software Engineering at both schools which is a slightly easier admit based on EI and MCA points.
Best of luck.
Thanks for the information So your advice is that to change my major to software engineering is a better choice. And does that mean I wouldn’t have chance to get into cs or ce?
I cannot tell you for sure that CS and CE are out of Reach except based on last year’s admission data, statistically you are not competitive. However, since you are an International applicant, I am not sure how your GPA translates into the Cal State and SLO GPA for comparison sake. Your SAT score is also below average but since you will be a Full pay student, that may give you a slight edge.
To meet last year’s EI threshold for CS at SJSU, you need at least a CSU GPA of 4.28. For CE, you need a 4.18 CSU GPA while for SLO around a 4.2+ would be needed since your SAT score is well below the average of 1481.
If you truly interested in attending either school, Software Engineering (SE) would give much better odds.
Best of luck.
Thanks for your help Wish you have a wonderful day
