My chances of getting into the University of Maryland?

Hey guys, UMD is by far my top choice… but I am not exactly a perfect student or a safe candidate for the school. Let me give some info and my stats and hopefully someone can provide insight on my chances. I intend on majoring in political science.

I would say I wrote a strong essay; I discussed my work with student government organizing a Thanksgiving food drive and helping those in my community.

I believe my recommendations are strong; one written by my APUSH Teacher who attended Columbia and has a political science degree, and one written by my AP English Lang teacher with a PhD

Parents are both high school grads, mom did not go to college and father dropped out.

I am OUT OF STATE

I also email the admissions representative on a regular basis asking questions and showing interest (also mentioned UMD is my top choice)

Thanks for the help!

Your stats will hurt a bit, and I don’t think showing interest will have a huge effect. However, being first gen could help quite a bit and your ecs are pretty solid. Overall I’d say you have something like a 60% chance.

UMD is also my top choice! I intend on majoring in computer science though.

GPA: 3.55 (UW) 4.1 (W)
SAT: CR+ W: 580 M: 680
ACT: Didn’t test
Courses: 7 AP/IB courses throughout high school. (Mostly an IB school) The majority of the courses taken are honors courses.

Extracurriculars:
Math Honor Society

Essays and Recs: I believe that I have a strong essay. I haven’t read the recs though, but both were written by my IB teachers that I have had for two years now.
School Type: Public
Gender: Male
In-State Residency

Sorry to post this on your thread dylanrosenthal. I wish you luck on your decision!!

@FutureTerp?! there’s no need to hijack a thread when you can easily make your own

@FutureTerp?! I know if you lived in my town you would probably be safe, but from what I understand UMD is more selective for in state. You should be fine though.

I think it is the exact opposite. UMD is more selective for out of state students. I could be wrong.

If you review their past stats, you’ll see that UMD is indeed more selective for OOS students.

As a Maryland Public University, UMD is required, by law, to admit a certain percentage of the in-state applicants. I know that many other, but not all.State Public Universities have similar requirements. These requirements result in UMD being more selective for OOS students.

@Meichangsu @NerdMom88 @SoofDad I am going by a resource my school uses called “Naviance.” It probably is more difficult if you live OOS, however for my school the acceptance rate is actually a lot higher than their overall acceptance rate. Last year 9/13 kids from my school were accepted.

@dylanrosenthal Well, she’s got the stats, but there’s always the element of chance… I guess we’ll see in a couple of weeks! :)>-
