My Chances of Getting into UT Austin?????

I want to do pre med or nursing at UT austin. I am a junior and i am in the top 20%. My volunteer hours are good and ill work more this summer & i think i can write a great easy. Should i go to ut dallas ( i know i can get auto admitted) and then transfer to ut austin or do i have a shot of getting in ? what should i do? i already stacked on ap and duel credit classes…… should i apply for an easier major?

sat is a 1325 . (1600 scale) trying to get it up higher tho…

There is no major called pre-med. you can major in whatever you want and go to medical school. Explore this site:

Read under “choice of major” and pre-med statistics.

With your rank, you don’t have a guaranteed spot. You definitely should apply to UTD, but that does not mean you cannot also give UT your best shot.

UTD has a great program for those who want to go to medical school. http://www.utdallas.edu/pre-health/ut-pact

^yes. UTD used to be just another commuter school, but they have really developed into one of the state’s best medical colleges. I would not even suggest transferring to UT. Get a great GPA at UTD and use it to get yourself into UT Southwestern’s medical school. UTA also has a great nursing program and is cheaper than UTD!

Please don’t get into the mindset of applying to easier major. That’s can be interpreted as a insult to people who put a lot of effort to the major they like.

UTA, UTD, and UT Austin all have great reputations for pre-health preparations.

I heard a lot of bad reviews on UT Dallas and the “social life” there. Mostly people are saying it sucks. Not that I want to go to a party school ( I really have no preference), but I’d want to enjoy the college life. That’s why I am stressing going to UT Austin because its D1 and a bigger school than UTD. What about Baylor or Texas Tech? What do you guys know about those schools.

Have you done research on the GPA medical schools look for? Being “pre-med” means 4 more years of really watching your GPA and preparing for the MCAT. Your social life is not going to be quite as robust as other undergrads and then there is medical school, residency and being a physician- similar strain on social life. Not to discourage you but it is a very real part of the career that causes many to leave it.

Baylor and Texas Tech are both great schools for preparing for medical school. Medical schools are very much focused on GPA, MCAT and research. They are less interested in the name of the school you attend. For that reason, many people advise going to a less competitive school where you can get a higher GPA- as long as you get adequate preparation for the MCAT and access to research.

I went to TTU and have had many relatives attend it recently. It has a large greek system that probably provides a lot of parties. It also has the large sports program to follow. I will say the majority of the social life is centered around alcohol/drugs as at many schools.

My DD will be going to UTD and to be honest that is one of the reasons - the lack of priority of partying. She likes to see concerts and be physically active. She enjoys Austin for those reasons but will be able to do that in Dallas as well. In Austin, it is almost too close to the school. I could see her going to concerts several times a week until she blows her money as well as grades.

It all depends on what you want. If you want the more traditional college experience with the Greek parties and large sports, TTU would be a good choice. I don’t know much about Baylor. I think it is similar to TTU but with a larger Christian influence. If your priority is academically focused with having some fun, you should consider UTD.
