Hi, this is my first post and I was wondering if you guys could help me out...

I am currently an undergraduate student (predental) at MSU (Michigan State, not Mississippi State lol) that is considering transferring to U of M - Ann Arbor. I am going to go into my 2nd year and I currently have a 3.939 GPA with 37 credits completed. EC wise, I do not do much EC's during the school year, just volunteering at a local food bank on saturday mornings, however, I do volunteer at the dental school and work (basically 9-5 M-F). How are my chances of transferring and what is the earliest time that I would be able to transfer?

P.S. I have my Chem 1 & 2 (I think chem 2 is p. chem at UM) and their labs, 1st year writing, racial inequality class, sociology 100, calculus 1& 2...

PLUS---how hard is it to get into the BME program? (biomedical eng)

I would attempt to transfer 2nd semester of your sophomore year and try again 1st semester junior year. You seem to have great credentials and seem to have a strong chance of acceptance. However, I can’t say this too accurately for you haven’t supplied a hs gpa, ACT/SAT, and other high school information which is going to be put into consideration when transferring.

Why transfer? Your GPA from MSU can get you into any dental school you want (including Michigan’s top 5 Dental program), assuming you do well on your DAT.

Of course, if you aren’t 100% sure you want to go into Dental School, transferring may be a good option. With your near 4.0 GPA, you should have no trouble getting into Michigan.

well, the thing is that the EC’s that I am doing over the summer is…only for the summer :). I wish I could do them year round, just so I am more consistent in my EC’s. Just seems like there is so much more to learn over a whole year than just the summer.

I have to agree with this. You have a stellar GPA. Going to UM and entering a different major might really hurt that GPA (though sticking to the same major won’t really hurt). Have you tried the Honors College at MSU? It’s not bad.

About the Honors college at MSU, I applied for admission but they rejected me. I had honors courses completed (honors option, where you do extra to get honors credit) but the professor somehow did not enter it into the system so I have 2 honors credits that doesnt show. I assume that they thought that I wasn’t doing the required amount of honors credits. From the time I got that rejection email, I wanted to transfer to Ann Arbor.

I had MUCH worse high school stats than you, and slightly worse college stats (at a much worse college) and I got in. So I imagine your issue is going to be more whether or not it’s a good idea to transfer at all. Can’t you contest those honors credits? If you’re just upset with MSU for messing that up, I must say UM isn’t immune to make colossally stupid errors as well.

well, in high school UM was my first choice and MSU was my backup. But the real reason is, as I mentioned before, that I can do my EC’s year round (you cant beat the experience I am going to get if I am at UM) instead of only the summer. I know, I am going to talk to the people at the honors college but I was wondering if I should go for the EC’s or just stay and try keep my GPA high

If you really think you’ll be happier here and that you’ll get a better experience, then I would transfer but I’d be wary that your GPA could take a slight hit-- transferring and making the transition isn’t easy for everyone and some people do need a period of adjustment. You’re obviously a great student so I wouldn’t worry too much about that but I’d be prepared for the possibility, and if the risk bothers you too much it might be better to stay at MSU. I’d take a look at your credits and maybe have a talk with an adviser to make sure you wouldn’t lose much in transition, because that might be a deciding factor by itself. I just went to a transfer orientation and a lot of people there were sacrificing half their credits or more to come. A lot of mine transferred, but not toward the requirements I’d meant them to, or just as electives. That was a hard pill to swallow!

I know who you are and you know who I am.

There is a place on the application that asks you for your history and if you still have it on your record, then your chances aren’t too good because umich takes it very seriously. You should probably wait till it expires before attempting to transfer.

yeah, i think blackpen is right about the character issues; however, if you can get away with them you will be fine.

I heard of a kid that purposely mislead people he called his “friends” by giving them fake answers on homework in high school. I don’t think umich would look to kindly on someone that would burn their friends just to get a higher grade in a class that doesn’t have a curve. I think umich is looking for smart kids that have some integrity.

I think stoopidboy has a good chance as long as he doesn’t have anything like that in his past.
