My chances?

GPA: 3.6 uw, 4.1 w
ACT: 30
Will take the SAT soon.

Clubs: Junior Classical League, Youth and Government, German (offices: treasurer and VP), Mock Trial, (will be inducted into NHS).
Volunteer work: I’ve been an active girl scout for 12 years and have volunteered at the equestrian center run by my council for 3 years. I take as many chances to volunteer elsewhere as I can. I will be teaching English in Ghana next summer.

Scare factor: I had a rough freshman year and got Cs both semesters in English I- gifted.

If any of this matters I go to a nationally accredited magnet school (top 25% in my class) , I am a black female, I live in the Deep South.

I am a junior and expect to raise my GPA by at least .1 points before graduation.

Is Brown a realistic reach for me? My other reach schools are Yale, Columbia, and Rice. Am I out of my mind?

The schools you mentioned are very difficult for anyone to get into. But being in the top 25 is not too good and your ACT is on the low end. Your EC and Volunteering is very good and since your an URM you have a good hook. Spend some time in the summer getting your scores up. Also, don’t forget to take SAT IIs as they are required for the schools you just mentioned.

Thanks for the advice! My rank is really low because 25% of my school has at least a 4.0 gpa w. I plan on getting soo many practice books. :-SS

nationally accredited hs? accredited by who?

Probably your GC will know best the colleges that students from your school with your profile get accepted to. And even if someone didn’t before it doesn’t mean they won’t.

Your gpa and scores are below average, as is rank, but it is possible. Freshman year C may not hurt too bad. URM helps a lot, geography may be a bit on your side too, Take a challenging Sr year schedule and do well. Take a look at the SAT-preparation subforum and read Silverturtle’s prep tips. That and a good essay are what you have left to work with.

Sorry, just seeing this, but thanks for the advice. To answer your question, it’s been accredited by Magnet Schools of America on multiple occasions. I’m assuming you meant my GPA and scores were below average for the schools I’m applying to, in that case I understand. Otherwise, I’m ranked in the 99th percentile in my state (which I know from numerous gifted evaluations I’ve taken). I’m also an incoming junior so I have this coming year and next year to get my grades up. Before I switched to the magnet I was in the top 10% but because you have to have a certain gpa to stay in a larger number of people have high a gpa. I’m taking 4 APs this year and 5 next year. I got a 5 on my AP test from sophomore year. That being said, I know I have much room for improvement. I’ll make sure I follow your advice. Sorry if I sounded a bit snappy. I get pretty bad anxiety when I’m faced with confrontation (the tone of your response seemed confrontational to me but that very well may not be the case) but I’m working on it. Thanks, again!
