My dad was in the Navy, can I get Financial Aid as a dependent??

My dad was in the Navy and I read somewhere that I could get free admission into UC (University of California) schools or CSU (california state schools).

I am a dependent of him. He did serve actively but it was before 9/11 and I know there is something called the post 9/11 GI bill.

Your dad needs to find out if he has any education benefits that he can give to you.

I don’t think Calif publics just give free tuition to children of vets.

Are you a Calif resident?

I bet that the tuition benefits are not transferable if the dad is not on active duty anymore. I know this because my brother in law had to extend his contract for two years so that his wife could get tuition benefits instead of him. We had a lengthy discussion about this.

Yes I am a California resident.

The only transferable benefits would be the post 9-11 GI Bill and that has to transferred while on Active Duty.

Also, if he served before 9/11, he would not be eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. You have to have at least 90 days of service after September 10, 2001 to be eligible.

Your state may have some scholarship/financial aid programs for the children of veterans, but I doubt they would cover full tuition to any UC or Cal State.
