MY ED School requires Quarter Grades?!

I just found out that Duke, where I am applying early decision, requires quarter grades from all applicants!! I have 3 A's and 2 B+'s right now! The B+'s are in AP Calculus AB and AP English. How much do you think they weigh the first quarter grades? I was somewhat concerned when I found that out because 2 Bs is not too impressive to a school like Duke.

I'm also concerned about this (also applied to Duke.) Although I have A's in AP Calc and AP Lit, I thought I was going to have a C in AP Physics C. I might have pulled that up to a B- or B if I'm lucky...I hope that doesn't look too bad.

Has anyone else been through this? How heavily are these QUARTER grades weighted. It is just a quarter, so there are not as many grades entered. Do high schools recalculate GPA and rank at this point or usually at the semester?

as long as you've kept up stellar grades throughout your freshman-junior years, I'm sure it won't harm you very much. The B+'s do look like you've let down your guard if you've had straight A's since freshman year, but if I were the admissions officer, I would not count against it very harshly.
The C+ though, may look like you couldn't handle the courseload, or you've slacked off. Let's hope you pulled it up to a B!

i'm applying early to duke as well. the admissions officer told me they are important if they're going to get to the office in time... meaning if your quarter ends before a certain date.

What date is that? Do you know? I have had a sprinkling of Bs (4) throughout high school, so at least it's not breaking a straight A trend.

my quarter ended yesterday...I hope that's too late :)

Mine ends on Tuesday. I hope that is too late also haha.

Well I pulled AP Calc up to an A- so I only have one B for the quarter.

Product Development Project (H)- A
AP Spanish- A
Physics (H)-A
AP English- B+
AP Calculus AB- A-

I am thinking that this won't help or hurt me at Duke ED. Am I right? Opinions. And I am not freakin out just to let everyone know. I am just curious.

They will just call your GC and ask that the grades be faxed over. If there is still not enough information of they feel that what you have preesented is not strong enough then they will either defer to RD or reject.

Twinkletoes, or anyone else? Do you know what that date is? Also has anyone had experience with this in the past?

My D usually has her weakest quarter first quarter and then her grades rise during the year in most courses. Her grades this time were very strong and her school has rushed to send them to her ED school (11/10/06 ED deadline). We were prepared to ask her counselor to include a note that her first quarter grades had always been her weakest, but they were strong enough that it wasn't necessary.

If some of you follow my daughter's usual pattern, you might consider seeing what your counselor can do for you. Yes, it might get you deferred while the college looks to see what your second quarter grades are, and that's a risk. On the other hand, if the counselor can back up the pattern with specifics, it might be what gets you over the hump of having a few weak first quarter grades and puts you into the Ed acceptance pile. And in rare cases it might turn a rejection into a deferral.

If you got Cs, that would be something to worry about. I think it's ludicrous to even think that a B+ would hurt your chances.

I marvel at people posting what they wish the answer was. The real answer is they ask for a reason. They want to make sure as the classes get harder your grades continue to be tops. If they'e not, it's a problem.

^^i agree. it's one thing getting As in regular classes. But in senior year, as with many people, a lot of people are stocking up on AP classes. And As in AP classes are so much harder than As in honors or regular classes.

My report card has one A and 5 A-'s with a full-AP courseload...

it all depends on ur school/... i mean seriously if ur school is lousy, u better get straight As..but say if it is like hotchkiss or phillips or choate, even straight B+ would look good enough for the lower ivies

A B is not the end of the world so everyone just stop it

arggh

^ no, but apparently, a C is....eek I'm just gonna hope for the best (that I brought it up to a B-something). Maybe all A's in every other class (4 APs) will pull me through?

Cs not the end either

I had 2 C+ s my sophomore year and a B- junior year and my college counsellor told me I hv a good shot at my ED school

I go to one of the little ivies boarding tho...but just to point out the fact that Cs not the end of the world
