My Essay Problem

Hey guys,

Well, now that the summer is coming to a close, I have been desperately trying get as far into the college app process as I can. So, I have started working on the common app essays. After investing a pritty significant amount of time into the main essay, I have a paper that I like alot and am proud of. Then, today, I guess I was in one of those writing moods because I wrote up an activity essay that I like just as much as my main essay. But, of course, a problem has arisen that I would really appreciate help with.

My "main common app essay" discussed my innate drive to attain an understanding of my surroundings. This then led to how I pedantically studied biology as I matured. Basically, it was a "why I love science" essay.

Then, I went on to write my common app activity essay. Without even thinking about it, I wrote an essay about our school science club. I founded this club last year and am pritty proud of it. Through the club, I have been able to get my school to start doing Science Olympiad and next year USABO. Additionally, I tried to focus on the social aspect of biology/science that I love-something I didnt really mention in my first essay, but it might have been hinted. However, both papers did mention that I sought to learn science more by "doing" than by reading from a textbook.

Is it a bad thing that both my essays are "science-y" and should I try to write another activity essay about something else? I could write one on FBLA. I won quite a few state econ and finance awards and plan on minoring in finance/econ, but I doubt the essay would be as passionate as my current essay.

ANY feedback is greatly appreciate!

Variety is nice, but stick with whatever is the better (i.e. more passionate) essay.

Any more feedback. Lol I am kinda stressing about this = D.

Dude, don’t stress now. It’s not even september: you’ve got months to write more essays. If you’re this eager to write your essays, then write another essay or two on a different topic (i.e. choose a different commonapp prompt, or make your own). The essays you write later will likely be better than the ones you write now. I know my EA application wasn’t as well written as my RD applications. Your essays are meant to show the admissions officers soemthing about you, and each essay AND supplemental essay should show something a little bit different. It’s possible that your activity essay about science club will fit perfectly in a prompt given in an application supplement, or non-commonapp application. You may also want to ask an english teacher or someone you know who’s already in college how the essays work together, and which one should be used where.

In the end, so long as your two independent essays are unique, and have slightly different voices, capturing different aspects of the same person, you should have a decent application.

Variety is the spice of life.

Even though I was totally gun ho about biology (USABO and all that jazz), I didn’t touch it in my common app main essay OR my activities essay and instead used it for the supplemental essays for schools that asked about your possible major or whatnot.

I wrote about a vegetable garden for my main common app essay and my chinese orchestra for the activities.

Seriously, there’s a lot of combinations. Good luck!
