Okay, so I recently calculated my GPA and it is horrible. I currently have a 2.57 GPA because I struggled in my Latin class, getting just above a 70 over the last two school years, I am now going in to my junior year after summer. I have lost sleep over this GPA, I have an 85% average, but the way GPA is calculated, mine is aweful. My grades for my sophomore year were as follows:

Accounting- 88

Geometry- 82

Latin II- 73

Intro Business- 91

Biology- 85

English- 89

US History Hnrs- 90

Pretty decent, except Latin. I really want to get into Bentley College and major in accounting. Next year I am taking AP English, AP American Government, Problems of Democracy Honors, Algebra II, Physics, Intro Business II, and Coaching 101. I go to a public school in Maine. Is this as horrible as it seems? Do colleges look at percentage grades or only GPA? Any answers would be helpful, I am losing sleep over this.

Thanks

Colleges look at your transcript. That means, they look at the individual classes you have taken, and the grades you earned in each of those classes. They will see pretty quickly that Latin was a disaster for you. Bad Latin grades would only matter if you were applying as a major in Latin or Classical languages. You aren’t.

Concentrate on earning good grades in the rest of your courses, and you will be fine.

I go to public school in Maine as well! What school do you go t?

Answer that question by PM, not in a post! Don’t share personal information online that can identify you.

noooo way another mainer right here too!

just study really hard next year, try to bring up your grades and colleges will see that you have an upward trend…which will help

are you serious you’re a freshman what are you doing here

How does an 85% average match up with a 2.57 GPA?

If the Accounting, Intro to Business, Biology, English and US History are Bs, Geometry is a C, and Latin is a D, and there is no grade weighting in the score provided.

I average 85% if you average out the percentage scores. You get points for letter grades in GPA, so that will be different.

Another question, will math and latin hurt my chances if I’m going to major in accounting? I know accounting has math, but it’s basically addition and subtraction, it’s not problem solving stuff. I would think business classes would be looked at a little more heavily

Accounting does involve math beyond addition and subtraction, and your future math classes certainly will matter. Geometry is relatively unimportant when compared to some other math classes you’ll take/have taken, but don’t expect to be able to get by with what math you learned in elementary school.
