i got an F in AP European history! yes i know this sucks and my usual grades are NOT like this...seriously.....i just had some stuff i needed to go through and i put way too much on my plate

my usual grades are all A's with the occasional B, also i am really good with math, physics, and computers (i mean really good [i am stating facts, not bragging])

do i still stand a chance with the F?

thanks for answering!

I think admission office will care more about your overall GPA and how many AP classes you took than individual course grade. However, having F in any class doesn’t look good. You know this… why do you even ask? Do you need someone’s shoulder to cry on? Brush off and do better next semester. If you got mostly A and B throughout your high school years, this won’t bring your GPA down that much

The average student who has currently paid a holding fee to Tech has a 3.89. The average student admitted had a 3.9+. 1470 (M+CR) and 3.7+ was in the wait list range. Unless you have a really good story, I can’t imagine your being admitted.

I assume that you have a 4.0 GPA Tech Calculated prior to this grade. When you add in this grade (assuming you have 15 core grades and this, being one of them, is a FINAL grade of an F?), it drops you down to a 3.73. Ouch.

“1470 (M+CR) and 3.7+ was in the wait list range.”

Where did you find this information? I’m really doubting that students with such high SAT scores and GPA are being wait listed… I know a lot who had much lower SAT scores and still made it in.

According to the high school, the GPA was the problem. The SAT was more than good enough. But, if you go completely by the Georgia Index (no weighting and no non-core courses), the GPA is only 3.6+. I know this student personally, but I know of others in the same situation.

Ignore these cynics. I know someone who got in with a GPA much lower than what they’re posting and SAT scores and ACT scores with much less.

Georgia Tech is a great school! But its still a public school…

And we’ve also seen OUTSTANDING students get waitlisted/rejected.

Outcast19, there is a rumor out there that Tech, in the state of Georgia, is trying to equalize geographically. If so, then being a student in a good school system would work against you. Otherwise, I find it hard to believe that people with much lower GPAs and test scores were admitted without a hook.
For what it’s worth I am familiar only with a good school system and the facts that I gave are consistent across that system for people without hooks.
This is sad only for students who actually wanted to attend Tech, had been good enough to attend in other years, and who did not apply to a backup. The others are going to a school that wants them.

There is definitely an advantage in the admissions program of Tech to take classes you’ll get nothing lower than an A in. If you took the easiest academic courses at the easiest school (except make sure you have taken Calc) and graduate with a 4.0, you are basically in, assuming your SATs are what you should get if you are in top classes.
