Ok everyone, so I'm 24 and have been in the same spot in life for like a year and a half. I currently have my AA degree and got accepted to Cal Poly Pomona. Before finishing my AA, I was heading in the biology direction, but a little before I finished up my AA, I began to not like biology too much.
Originally (this fall), I applied to Cal Poly Pomona as an Environmental Biology major because of all of the biology classes I had under my belt, and I applied to the university just in case if I wanted to go during fall 2012. So pretty much, since right before I finished my AA, I realized that I didnt like biology too much, its almost like I have to jump into a new major once at a new university.

Well now I do want to go, but there aren't really any majors I'm crazy about there (as I mentioned earlier, Im not too interested in the hard biological sciences of life.) I have a strong interest in the environmental field, but I dont think biology is the aspect I'd like to approach the environmental field from. I do need a job that can pay me more than the job which I currently have right now, and my parents are getting old so I cant live with them too much longer (nor do I want to: I want to move out), but saying that, here are a few of the options im thinking about:

For a few years now, I've had an interest in the environmental field, except I haven't really had a good, solid direction to go in that field (such as biology, engineering, design, etc). One of the options I can do is to study a broad environmental major to give myself a deeper knowledge of the field and to further sharpen my interests in the environmental field. Plus, I would have some credibility concerning the science behind environmental issues.

My concerns:
a. This sounds like a fun option, but I just dont have much faith that a degree of this sort would bring me a solid higher paying job. From what I've seen, it seems like degree's are loosing their value and what employers are caring more about now is certain skill sets. Plus I hear this major is often seen as a tree hugger major by employers

b. I also think it would be cool to get a degree in sustainable business, or something like that ( a mix of environmental and business classes), because then I can have the broad reaching business credibility in searching for a job, along with the environmental classes I want to take. I also have an interest in social business too. Its just hard to find a program that offers this.

Try to get into the Fire Department and do my degree after im in, or go for a paramedic/bachelors combo. I've been an emt for 4 years and before this, I was in the fire explorers. Also, I rode along with a really good fire department a few months ago, honestly it was like my dream department. This option is also good, because firefighters get a lot of time off: at the station I visited, they worked 2 days (a 48 hour shift), then got 4 days off. Pretty sweet.
a. My only concern about this is that I think I'd ultimately want to do something environmental as a career/venture.
b. Being a paramedic might be stressful (but I guess not too bad if im at a slower station, like the one I rode along at)

During the fall, trying to find a job which pays more, even taking some trade classes if I have to, while continuing to check out different environmental subjects by sitting in university classes, etc.

Squeeze myself into whatever major at Cal Poly Pomona I feel would be best suited for me.
