Well I had mixed feelings about my orientation experience

Positive
Lots of hot girls, more hot asian girls than i thought (which is a good thing)
Dancing was fun
The orientation counselors were cool for the most part
The students also seemed pretty sociable and down to earth
The college looked better than i thought

Not so great
The weather was unbearable
The dorm rooms were the size of closets
Lots of unimportant events and lectures
The city was more rural than i thought although it looks nice
The whole event was sort of disorganized for the most part specially the scheduling of classes
The food was not that great

Overall the college seemed ok. If it werent for the weather and the location it would be a great university overall. One of the problems i might have is that im a city person and im going to have trouble adjusting to a place like riverside. Also on my way there i saw some houses that made houses on my part of town (south central LA) look like mansions. Another good thing for me was that I didnt see many preppy people which however gives off the vibe that people that go there have financial difficulties or are rejects. Also the school population seems like its 50% asian 25% white 15% hispanic and 10% other which might be a problem for me since ive never been in a place with so little hispanics and that many asians. I dont mean to insult anyone with those comments im just being sincere. But overall im looking forward to attending UCR this fall.

i'm glad you liked it. For sure there are alot of cute asian girls, and the school is like 40% asian.

all the students i've met are down to earth and cool, for the most part kids aren't poor. They are usually middle class.

Ah yes, the weather. The one thing that sucks most about Riverside is the desert temperature. It's HOTTTT during the fall and unbearable during the spring/summer. I remember not going to class because it was too hot haha but thats just me.

Don't worry about the surrounding area, there's really nothing to do around Riverside so you won't venture too far from school other than to go out clubbing or eating.

did you have to sit through that stuipd college life video that was filmed in 1980 by stanford kids? i fell asleep for that one and snored.

btw, which dorm did you get? i didn't think my pentland room was that small.

Was this the first time you have ever been in a dorm room? I ask this because Ive been both in Cal and Harvey Mudd dorms and they are pretty much the exact same size, although Lothian has slightly bigger rooms than Pentland. Its the Upper stairs tv living room and the private bathrooms that make is to sweet.

As for the food, most of the cafeteria food did indeed suck when i went there. The pizza was alright and I actually did enjoy the chicken strips but for the most part i was hungry the whole FDSHDFPISDHF time. However, did you try any of the foods at the temporary commons. I only tried 3 things: A breakfast burrito at the sandwich shop, a breakfast sandwich at the same place, and some unagi(eel) sushi from the shop next store. All 3 were very cheap and tasted great.

As for:
"Lots of unimportant events and lectures
The city was more rural than i thought although it looks nice
The whole event was sort of disorganized for the most part specially the scheduling of classes."

True, although for the middle one, there will be enough stuff on campus to keep you busy im sure.

Did they make you guys walk a lot in the hot weather? I went there at night this summer and it was still freakin hot. Don't know if I want to deal with it when the sun's out.

The pentland dorms were cool, they were just smaller than i thought. The weather was probably the worst. I dont mean to insult anyone with this statement but compared to other colleges ive visited the people here seemed like a lower class. Mostly everybody i talked to came from the sorrounding area or not too far from riverside. Also i didnt think there were going to be that little hispanics. Ive never socialized with asians or whites ever in my life. That was probably the first time ive ever talked to a white person my age.

I actually live about 60 miles from UCR in the Coachella Valley.

About us:
1. 2nd hottest place in the world by record (lost by 1 degree to DV)
2. Every 2 weeks or so an algae bloom in the Salton Sea flips, releasing a rotten eggs smell that everybody in the valley can smell for a day or two.
3. its humid

My thoughts, UCR isnt that bad.

As for people's class, i could go into how each person's "class" at UCR is basically blank because it was their parent's "class" that they were raised in, but Im sick of such discussion right now. Dont worry, its not you

Locster, you're going to have an interesting experience then. It may open your eyes a bit on diversity. According to 2 years ago, it was the 3rd most diverse campus in the nation.

I mean, it is just the school that's WOW for you, I think if you venture out of school, you will realize that there are more hispanics and such. For a 4 block area, you might even fit at home (south central).

Also "Lots of unimportant events and lectures" - getting something out of those useless lectures is VERY important to your success and enjoyment to go for all things. GO EAP!

Seiken is right again on the dorm size, IMO they are about the same size as any other traditional dorm, maybe even bigger in some cases. You escaped the nasty "cum" trees last year. It went by quickly cause the heat was weird during winter and burned it all off before anyone could get sick from them. And yes, other UC's have this too.

It does vary much by area. Some parts are still filled with orange trees and dirt fields, others are filled with buildings. The city has a lot of trees- if you look at it from above, you will see lots of green. It's certainly not rural, but perhaps so rural compared to South Central LA. I thinks it's largely suburban with some aspects of rural areas (such as the orange trees) and some of the city. I would even go so far as to say that there are some things to do in Riverside, other than leave for other places, of course. :)
