I had a problem my freshman year, it lead to a collective gpa of 1.8. I really am trying now and passed my last semester of classes with an A- average.

It too late for me? I know high school counts and I am wondering if I can ever place a good rank in my class now (bearing in mind I go to public school)

So I guess, I'm just wondering if I'm doomed to work at Burger King or do I have a shot at something?

Yes, you aren’t finished. You aren’t doomed. Don’t get down on yourself.

Your GPA happened in FRESHMAN YEAR, which is important to remember; you were younger, you were in a time of adjustment, and it’s easier to be forgiven for freshman mistakes.

If you can keep doing well (As and Bs) and raise your gpa, you can still get into college. Just explain your circumstances and why you didn’t do so hot freshman year.

Don’t be so negative. Think optimistically.

Like everyone else said I think you have a good chance just because it was freshman year. You are on this site which means you do care and take your academics seriously, which is now being shown through grades this semester.

A lot of colleges disregard freshman grades, so as long as you keep your grades high enough to get you a decent rank (depending on the sorts of schools you’re looking at, a “decent” rank will vary), you should be fine. Just make sure to look exclusively at schools that ignore freshman year.

If your low grades were due to a medical issue, you also can have your GC explain that in the GC recommendations that all colleges require.

And it is true that some colleges disregard freshman year. Others are very impressed by upward trends. Keep your grades up, and there will be lots of colleges that would be happy to have you.
