My SAT Score

Critical Reading 650
Math 640
Writing 620

Heh someone kill me....

There goes Dartmouth.

Well not exactly ajayc's problem but the first time I took my SAT I got a 2240 but the 2nd time I got a 2130 because I rushed into the exam, I wasn't feeling well and my proctor screwed up the timing on the essay which I think really hurt my writing score (650 the 2nd time compared to a 730). Would Dartmouth give me the benefit of the doubt and only look at my 2240 (I didn't improve in any sections).

Yes, they only look at the highest score for each section. Even if they're not taken at the same sitting.

Why? Can't you retake? Your scores aren't that low and I think you could easily improve.

Yeah I can retake my SATs. But I had never expected so low scores. And even with this crap score my National Percentile is around 90%! If I retake my SAT in october I wont be able to apply ED.

I had one more question in mind. If I take my SAT IIs in October and get a whooping nice score I mean like 750 above (or maybe 800) on my three SAT IIs will Dartmouth forgive my 1910?

ajayc, i know someone with a 1690 (only took the test once) who made it into dartmouth

You're far from barred from the school, though If you think you could improve your SAT score, i'd strongly suggest retaking it

I know I can do way better than that! I had been scoring 2230 and more on Kaplan and Princeton Review Practice tests :(

A 1690?? How?? I've heard of 1900-ish people being accepted to ivies, but never that low...

that's something to work with definitively, there's only room for improvement

I have heard of someone with a 1740 getting into Princeton but it depends on the circumstances so low scores won't kill you but they definitely don't help. Try and retake.

If that's the case, then you are going to have to retake the test. If you KNOW that you can do better, then at this point, you really have nothing to lose.

For International students, a 1910 is pretty much a killer. I also haven't seen an Indian International student in the Class of 2011 yet, so not to put the pressure on you, but you gotta step it up.

Good luck.

There are quite a few indian internationals in 2011 (four or five i think). Out of those i think just one is an american citizen.

Trust me, SAT scores are overrated. As long as you have a 2100 plus, it wont hurt you. I know many people with 1900s who've gotten into colleges in dartmouths league.

Haha, always the "angel's advocate" ammar. I'm just trying to put the pedal to the metal on this guy - that it's time to put on his game face.

I'd like to think that you're right for a 2100 - I'm pretty sure it'd be alright if you had a 2200+. But an International student with a 1900? I've heard of no such thing. Plus, we want to maximize his chances.

Thanks you all for your response :)

Can anyone answer this? Before I decide to drop my ED idea! :D

Erm...the november SAT is on Nov 2 and the scores will be out by Nov 20. So can I still apply ED?

No, Dartmouth won't forgive your 1910. No offense, but it's just too low for an International student.

Sometimes, you can take your SATs for ED on the November date - check the specific policies on Dartmouth's website. I was lazy too and took my SATs on the October and November administrations (woo, procrastination) right before I applied EA to somewhere.

I agree with ammars that the SAT may be a bit overrated. Still, you'd want a safe score to deal with.

Yep Big Brother I dont want to give a single reason to Dartmouth to reject me! :D

I will check on the Dartmouth Portal about the SAT policy I really hope I can give it in Nov and still apply ED!

NOpe cant find anything about that :( Well the only thing that I read was that I can apply ED without my SAT IIs

You may apply for Early Decision even if you have not yet taken two SAT II: Subject Tests. You must, however, take two SAT II's no later than January of your senior year. These test results will be used in further evaluating the applications of deferred Early Decision applicants and for academic placement of accepted candidates.

So retake the SAT in october. instead :-D just forget about sat 2s

Yeah but I live in a country where 98 percent of the population isnt fluent in english. A girl got into pomona with a 1920, another got into williams with a 1950. Conversely, a guy with a 2400 got rejected by every college except amherst (As you can tell, i'm REALLY not a big fan of the SATs).

The thing is no one actually cares about the writing score that much. I think if you get a good toefl score (which i've heard its ridiculously easy to do), then that will supplant your low verbal score. All thats left is math :-/ which isn't bad, but it isnt brilliant either. I'd try to pull it up to a 700. But when you retake the SAT, you should concentrate on the maths part at a little more than the others.

That is what shocked me the most! I had been getting almost 800 on my practice tests! :D

I shall no longer believe on my practice test! They are nothing more than a lie. :p

So its decided SAT I in October and I still apply ED! woot! :D

Cheers!

PS: Congrats on your 600th post mate!

I don't think English proficiency has much to do with the SATs, as I've always said. Take the Koreans for example. A LOT of Koreans from South Korea have SAT scores in the 2300s. But if you've ever met them (and you will meet some at Dartmouth), you would think that some of these students have never uttered an English word in their entire lives. It's still very possible to beat the SAT without actually being good at the English language - which makes me wonder about the validity of the assessment.

I think ideally, ajay would want to do well on his tests relative to the rest of the applicants from India. If everyone else is making 1900s, then fine. I highly doubt that though. For Indians, I would say anything above a 2100 is "safe" (revised from my previous 2200 - for most other Internationals).

Good luck on your attempt in October ajay, and I really do hope you get a good score. I'm just so glad that I'm done with that crap.
