My Story - Will My Dream Schools Understand?

Here's my situation. I am a senior at an extremely small and selective high school in New Jersey. To get into the school, I had to compete with 999 other applicants in an entrance exam. I scored well on the exam, and went through the second level of screening - interview. did well on that and got into one of the most rigorous engineering focused high schools in the state.

During my first year in this High School, my mother's Multiple Sclerosis (an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord) grew worse and I started having to take care of her non-stop, before and after school. This greatly affected the time I had to do other things. My GPA is, unfortunately, a 4.388/5.000 on a weighted scale.

My question to you guys is, will my schools:

MIT
Carnegie Mellon University
Cornell
Columbia
Ann Arbor
Urbana Champaign
Princeton
Texas A&M
Purdue - West Lafayette

understand that I have gone through devastating changes over the course of my high school career that have substantially changed the very basis of who I am? They have matured me and given me a clear goal for what I want to do - robotics.

Here are the rest of my stats:

Stats:
SAT I (by section): 2270 (730M, 780CR, 760W)

PS - Thanks for your time brah.

bumpppppppp

Ad officers will know your HS. (I attended one of those HS.)
I think you (or your GC) need to explain your situation on your apps.

MIT, Princeton, Columbia: Reach (for everybody)

CMU and Cornell: Decent chances

Michigan, UIUC: Most likely IN

Texas A&M and Purdue: Safety

Good luck to you!

I agree with 20 more.

Thanks [=
Let me know if you want me to chance.

Keep it coming guys.

bummmpppppp

bump. come on guys i’d really appreciate the help - ill chance back as well.

Depending on your financial situation, you could easily be admitted to MIT/Princeton/Columbia. They’re constantly looking to expand their student population not only based on ethnicity (which you would contribute to anyways), but also socioeconomic status. You should also look at the breakdown of where their students are from; whichever has the fewest from NJ would be most likely to accept you.

I think your schools will understand and your high sats make up for it. Good Luck you should definitely get into a couple of the ones you mentioned.

Great. Thanks guys, if you give me a link to your chance me threads, I promise to chance you.

bump 10char

come on guys… anyone out there?

Your upward trend will definitely help you. Since you are a human, Princeton and MIT are reaches, but they really are for everyone. Columbia and Cornell are probably in the “low reach” category. I bet you’ll get in anywhere else. Good luck and thank you for chancing me!

If you want a more sharply focused answer, I have a question. What was you unweighted GPA? Were any of your grades Cs or lower? In what courses did you get the lower grades? It’s very hard to tell what a weighted GPA means without context.

Sure. My unweighted GPA is a 3.51 on a scale of 4.
Only 1 C - geometry freshman year (the final exam was the week of my mom’s surgery)
My low grades were across the board - anything that required studying time. My highest scores were in Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences during Junior year. Thanks.

I pretty much agree with 20more:
MIT, Princeton, Columbia are a mid/high reach for everybody. Schools like this turn down a lot of valedictorians and top students sometimes.
CMU and Cornell:

Michigan, UIUC, Texas A&M and Purdue are match to low reach.

As for your circumstances, I wish your family the best. I think the colleges will understand what you have been through. The EC at the camp is also showing how it impacted you to help others.

Best of luck! Also, please chance me back at: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1233618-chance-me-i-chance-back-please-drexel-swarthmore-bu-bsmd.html

Wow. So you really think that Michigan, UIUC, Texas, and Purdue are low reaches?

Also, what about CMU and Cornell?

I’m not too familiar with their stats, so I don’t want to give you wrong information

bump 10char

help me out?
